let me just start this post by quoting the wise words of esqueleto from the movie nacho libre…
“i believe in science.”
i know i’m being a little silly, but the truth of the matter is that things are scary out there. we’re living in uncertain times. but what i do know is that there are people out there– people in our own administration– who don’t believe that climate change is real. but it is real! and every individual (as well as institution) has a responsibility to not only accept the scientific consensus, but commit themselves to doing whatever we can to help save our environment. all of the social issues that we’re currently struggling with (and they are major), won’t matter at all if we completely obliterate the environment. it’s scary stuff. so i have strengthened my resolve to be more vocal about the ways that i’ve committed to being eco-friendly around the house. you may remember this post about going green that i shared after we moved into our new house. i touched down on energy-star rated appliances, recycled denim insulation, solar panels, buying used and vintage, grey water, and drought-tolerant landscaping. i’m still moving forward on those projects as well as doing research into smaller ways that i can reduce my waste, including cloth diapering!
so today i thought i’d share some of the inspiration i’ve been collecting on pinterest. mostly around reducing waste by buying bulk, using reusable glass and cloth containers, and generally replacing plastic with more sustainable materials. very soon we’ll also be installing solar panels on our home, so i’ll be sharing information and updates on that project as well as the progress we’ve been making on our california native, drought-tolerant landscaping!

Love this! I’ve been slowly transitioning containers to glass and just bought a few wax pencils so that I can mark dates/contents. I was struck by how much I preferred using wax pencils over ID stickers/chalkboard/etc. It’s no fuss and looks great.
that’s great! i might have to do the same. i used to use an old-fashioned label maker, but they are such a pain!
Yes Erin! And as Arnold Schwarzenegger has been trying to say, if our country got on board with committing to saving our environment and not just the state of California, we’d be getting somewhere.
oh man, i never thought i’d find myself agreeing with arnie haha! but that is so true! california has been doing some great things. i’m working on some posts about some of the home improvements we’ve done since we got our place, and most of it would not have been possible without the rebates and tax credits the state provides for things like landscaping, solar, etc! we even signed up for an earthquake retrofitting program. it’s a lottery system once you apply, but fingers crossed that we get selected! :)
Love this, the glass looks lovely too ♡
I make a lot of my own cleaning supplies and other things, so this is totally up my alley. I also am a composting lady. hehe. I am going to check your pinterest page!
Speaking of scary times, I read an article today about how the ice caps of Antarctica have split like crazy which is really not good. . . ugh. So many things going on and we are destroying one another and our earth.
Amen sister!
love these images and idea, very inspiring! there are so many small changes we can make everyday that make an impact!

I have been using soapnuts for a while now and hope that it is something that catches on. I love the first photo of the pantry – love. Great ideas for eco living. Thanks for sharing!
