yipes stripes!

did you guys ever chew fruit stripe bubble gum when you were kids? or maybe you still do? remember those really ridiculous commercials, and the vegetable based dye tattoos on the gum wrappers? i used to buy a pack and chew the whole thing in one sitting because the flavor didn’t last very long. oh, childhood novelties!

anyway, what was the point of this? oh yes, stripes. i cannot believe that i do not have a striped t shirt. such a classic, always in style, appropriate for all seasons. anyone have any idea where i can get one for a good price? it’s high time i got one!

column a: jean seberg in breathless, jen h. on lookbook, raychel sonveeco on flickr, hedvig l. on lookbook
column b: audrey tautou in coco avant chanel, the sartorialist, audrey hepburn, refinery 29

UPDATE: i totally bought a vintage breton stripe shirt from kennedy holmes after writing this and then i found a boat neck striped shirt from the rodarte for target collection. i’m good.

  1. Great article! Always a great thing to keep in the closet.

For ultra classic pieces, J Crew is a guarantee.

    Love Grace.

  2. Forever21 has quite a few striped shirts for not a whole lot. Just bought a red striped shirt the other day ;)

  3. I've had some recent thrifting luck for stripes! actually found an APC shirt, so weird. One of my fave black & white shirts is from J. Crew (also thrifted), I bet they still have some good ones in the actual stores!

  4. Just found your blog through clothes horse, beautiful: funny- after watching coco before chanel I went out and bought myself a striped shirt from j.crew. very reasonable, super soft, and wearable with almost every outfit. It always inspires a Chanel like simplicity.

  5. i love stripes :) i have a ton of stripes from my obsession last year but i definitely need to invest in a black and white one. and i remember that gum! i was obsessed with the tattoos.

  6. you know what, im am putting a black and white striped shirt just like a lot of these on etsy tonight! so funny you did this post today <3

  7. i remember when they had teenage mutant ninja turtles tattoos with bubblegum. i used to make my parents buy them all time and i was covered in them! awww this brings me nack.

anayway, just to say, i rememberd seeing some good striped shirts at work: stop by H&M and give a look. maybe you'll find something you'll like!

  8. I just saw Coco Before Chanel last night and was BLOWN AWAY! I can't get her little striped tee out of mind! I already have a couple, but that's one think that you can never have too many of!

  9. It's a little embarrassing but I have a whole drawer just for striped tops. About 98% of them are thrifted so I say hit up the thrift stores for some! It's mega cheap and I've found some that are fitted and others that are kinda slouchy, which is great. I don't think I'll ever stop buying striped tops because if I see one I like (I pretty much go for the classic shaped ones…no buttons or anything unless it's really special) I'll buy it. What's really awesome about striped tops is that you can dress it down or up.

  10. I just got a nice striped Zara one similar to the one Audrey Tatou's wearing. You should definitely check their TRF section, as they've got quite a few styles. :)

  11. So funny you brought up Fruit Stripe Gum. My Step Grandfather would bring it for me when he visited because he knew I NEVER was allowed sugar gum. Anyway, the little kids at Christmas got some in there stocking (my SIL's grandbabies) and I was so shocked to see it. My mom kept saying Yipes Striped Gum and I said no I think it's Fruit Stripe like on the package and didn't know why she thought it was that until you mentioned the commercial!! I emailed her right away, hahaha!!! Thanks for the reminder. I LOVED that gum but you are right, the flavor doesn't last long because I tried a piece of my great neices. For some reason, I never cared when I was little ;o)
