momo

this is my little cat friend, momo. you may remember when i introduced her last year in this post when she was just a baby. well, at the time, i thought i would end up showering you with pictures of her all the time, but instead, she hasn’t made an appearance since! so here she is all grown up, though she still looks like a little kitten to me! her name is momo after the book by michael ende (the same author who penned the neverending story), which was a childhood favorite. brendan wanted to name her “money cat” after he read that tortoiseshell cats are good luck, so we usually call her “momo money cat!”

there’s also second sneaky little reason that i’m posting these photos… if you follow me on twitter, you may have seen my tweets about getting a new camera. well, i finally did it! these photos were the first test shots with my new canon 5d! i am so excited to play around with it some more. now let’s just see if these rainy days will let up!

  2. Sweet cat she’s still so tiny and quite adorable. Congrats on getting the 5D any video projects in the works? Such a great camera and high on my wishlist!

  3. GUH, what a darling! Tortoiseshell meowzers are the cutest, my boyfriend’s parents have one and she bleats like a little goat!

  4. I have a tortoiseshell kitty too! Her name is Mortimurrr. I had no idea that they were supposed to be lucky. That’s good to know.

  5. Congratulations on the new camera. as for Momo. . .woah I remember the kitten photos. Goodness how animals grow (and so lovely too). I think my husband would like to read this Momo book. He read The Neverending Story and adored it (I should read it too since it is also one of my all time favorite movies). I haven’t been able to see the book in English though when I’ve been searching for it. . .wait a second here. I watched a movie on T.V. back in the 80s that was in Spanish and there was a large tortoise throughout it. I have a feeling this was the same story!! That’s awesome to find out things like that when you forgot or didn’t know what it was!!

  6. Aww looks just like the kitty i babysit for! ok, actually housesit, but she’s such a sweet snuggler I call her a baby. Hmm can you tell I’m dying to get my own cat?

  7. My boycat is named Momo, too! I’ve never known anyone else with a cat named Momo. My boycat is all black. I adopted him when he was a kitten. i initially thought I wanted to name him Bagheera, after the black panther in The Jungle Book. Knowing my penchant for shortening my pets’ names and giving them ‘cutesy’ nicknames, I figured I’d start calling him “Baggy” within a few months, and “Baggy” just isn’t a good name for a kitty. On the drive home from the place where I adopted him, I passed by a Thai restaurant called Thai Momo and I kind of liked the name. So Momo it became.

As he grew up, I recalled that scene in Casino where Robert DeNiro refers to Mormons as “fucking momos,” so for a while, whenever I got mad at my boycat, he was “fucking Momo.” Fortunately, that didn’t last long. After being dragged to see Memoirs of a Geisha by a friend, I started calling him “Hatsumomo.” after the fierce geisha played by Gong Li in the movie. Most recently, my Korean upstairs neighbor told me that “momo” means “peach” in Japanese. I like that idea the best. …Anyway, it’s cool to see another Momo kitty!
