the big island

today is my last day in hawaii! my week long adventure has finally come to an end and i’m headed to the airport in a few short hours thankful to have had to opportunity to come here, and happy to have a few photos to remember it by. these were taken near keokea beach park on the northernmost tip of the big island of hawaii. the scenery on this part of the island is breathtaking to say the least, and i really wish i had more time to explore the area! but it was fun to hop around the beach in another one of the vintage dresses i picked up at discovery antiques earlier this week! the sixties style and bright colors really popped against the green and blue scenery.

i’m also very honored to have picked up this beautiful hand woven clutch from the kimura lauhala shop. i discovered the shop while exploring the artist community in holualoa and was blown away by the beautiful selection of hand woven bags and hats. the woman behind the counter told me that the shop had been built by her grandfather in 1914 after he walked across the island from hilo with her grandmother. they set up shop and her grandmother began designing beautiful hand woven bags and hawaiian fabrics. lining the shelves behind the counter were vintage purses woven by her grandmother that i wish she would have let me buy! but she said she was keeping them in hopes that her daughters would learn to make them! it’s that wonderful, rich history that draws me to vintage, and i was so thankful to have had the opportunity to listen to her story!

  2. that is such a lovely story! :) i love independent stores like these that have so much character to them… and that’s a really adorable clutch you managed to get! these photos really make me want to visit Hawaii someday! how was the weather btw? Was it humid or not too bad?

    1. it is very humid. here in kailua kona, where i’ve been staying, the average high has been around 86 and the average low has been 75 with humidity between 50 – 80 percent. it kinda knocked the wind out of me when i got here, but as the week has gone on, i’ve acclimated pretty well. it is definitely worth the visit!

  3. Wow, looks like the perfect holidays ;) I love independent old stores because they’ve character & quality. It’s a shame that nowadays they can really compete with big companies.

  4. wow! what an amazing bag and such an amazing story. and you tell is so well! these are the reasons I love vintage too. it just blows my mind sometimes, the history behind things. it is so much more special than anything new. i dont see new clothes striking up such emotion in people.. its amazing.

  5. That dress is amazing and it compliments perfectly your haircut, you definitely look like out of the 60’s! You look gorgeous. Of course your clutch and sandals make the whole outfit great as well.

I loved all your hawaii photos!

  6. Oh, Erin, I am so jealous. I went to Kauai for my honeymoon and it was seriously the best week EVER. It’s just impossible to imagine how beautiful Hawaii is until you see it for yourself…and you brought the perfect outfits, too!

  7. The colors in that dress remind me of Stella McCartney SS2011, with the fruit print dresses. As usual, your keen eye means sick vintage finds!

  8. I love that such a beautiful bag comes with en equally beautiful story. I hope you are settling back in after your trip! Can’t wait to see more photos.

  9. What a lovely story. I always wonder about the history behind certain pieces. When you get to hear about it first-hand, it feels like you’ve been let in on a really special secret.

  10. Thank you so much for sharing these lovely photos and stories of your vacation! Really gave me some inspiration during my recent trip to the Big Island.
    =)
