weekend away

calivintage: weekend away

this past weekend i celebrated my 29th birthday. i’m not one to make a big fuss or throw a wild party, and i’ve very specifically informed all of my closest friends that i do not like surprises. instead, i prefer to take the opportunity to ease into my new year on a relaxing weekend away. it’s actually become a bit of a birthday tradition for me. and this year, we drove three hours north to a little town called gualala along the california coast, to stay in a beautiful beach house at st. orres overlooking the ocean complete with everything you could possibly need: expansive views, a cozy fireplace, a sauna, and a jacuzzi overlooking the water.

the beginning of the trip was just a bit tumultuous. the forecast threatened rain and thunderstorms, and we found ourselves driving through winding country roads when the gas light started blinking. past the point of no return, we meandered along the hilly terrain for 50 miles until we finally popped out on the coast to be greeted by a service station. the entire time, we were doing our best not to imagine what it would be like to find ourselves stranded in the middle of a thunderstorm on a windy one lane road without cell phone reception. but our fears were for naught because we we made it out alive with .2 gallons of gas left in the tank, and a bright blue sky with the sun continuing to shine as we explored the area before heading to the house for a very pleasant evening (see photos).

the next morning wasn’t quite so kind, but it was honestly just as beautiful. i woke up obscenely early to look out at the ocean and watch the waves crash along the shore while big grey clouds filled the sky and it began to rain. and it pretty much rained for the rest of the day, foiling our plans to explore the nature areas, but certainly not stopping us from enjoying a few indoor activities like breakfast in bed, naps, and more sauna time. on the way back, we drove along the coast and reminisced about our bike tour, almost amazed that a couple of years ago, we actually rode that entire stretch of highway one on our bikes.

all in all, it was a weekend i will not soon forget!

i still can’t decide what was better. the jaccuzzi overlooking the ocean, or the sauna.

sometimes rainy mornings are the best.

the saddest part of my day was when we had to pack up and leave. i stuffed all of my belongings into my amelia weekender by portland-based line, ellington.

it’s currently pouring rain outside, and as you can see, vivetta spring 2012 is the perfect solution to a rainy day. i can’t get enough of the watermelon and citrus slice motifs mixed with pastel picnic plaids and nautical themes. it’s got me dreaming about spring and summer and hawaiian vacations and fresh fruits and picnics. in fact, i have a serious hankering for that pretty lemon collar dress!

season after season, vivetta comes up with some of the most whimsical, playful, and experimental pieces. she is, after all, the woman who designed this cat skirt!

outfit: 90s dad

calivintage: 90s dad

perhaps it has to do with that fact that we’re currently in the midst of men’s fashion week, but for whatever reason, i’ve been digging the menswear lately. yesterday i wrote about p. johnson tailors and today i’m dressed (kinda) like a dude. i call it my dad outfit, so it was pretty appropriate that when i asked brendan if i fit the bill, he said i looked like chevy chase. especially since my idea of what a dad looks like is mostly some weird amalgamation of my own dad and dads i’ve seen in goofy 90s movies. personally i think i look a bit more like rick moranis. either way, the look definitely called for a pair of high rise pleated khaki shorts, which i hadn’t worn in almost two years! for some reason, over the past couple of years, i’ve really shied away from shorts. something about those itsy bitsy inseams makes me feel a bit overexposed, which is rather silly when you consider the length of most of my skirts (see monday’s post). so with a bit of encouragement from my coworkers who razzed me when i told them that i don’t like shorts, i decided to pull this pair out from the depths of my closet. last time i wore them was here and here. perhaps it’s time for a bit of a shorts revival! and a 90s movie marathon!

shirt: j.crew boy shirt
sweater: thrifted vintage wool cardigan
shorts: thrifted vintage high rise khaki shorts
socks: smartwool cable knit socks
shoes: bass wayfarers
bag: j.w. hulme mini legacy bag
lipstick: ysl rouge pur couture in le rouge

stop american censorship

i know that if you use some of the most popular sites around the web (i.e. google, wordpress, tumblr) or are active on social networks (i.e. facebook and twitter), then you’re probably already aware of the current sopa strike. and i know that obama has already vowed to strike down the sopa and pipa bills, and that with increasing pressure, many senators have now backed down. and while i know i may not have all that much muscle in this little space on the web, i just wanted to let you know that i decided to postpone my scheduled post for today in solidarity with the movement.

so just in case you haven’t already, i strongly urge you to watch this video and to write to your senators to protect our right to share content on the web! it doesn’t stop here! click here for more information.

i know that i very infrequently post about menswear. in fact, the last time i shared a men’s clothing line was back in 2010 when i discovered this hilarious lookbook by freeman’s sporting goods. but every once in a while, a very creative lookbook catches my eye. such was that case when i recently came across this amazing collection of photos by p.johnson tailors while visiting les yeux sans visage. i may not know a ton about menswear, but all of the pieces look impeccable and of course, i’m a sucker for those amazing masks, which i assume are at least inspired by el gÁ¼egÁ¼ense, if not actually procured from nicaragua. gotta love a good sense of humor, especially when it comes to something like mens tailoring, which has a bit of a reputation for being quite a serious undertaking.

best basics

best basics

people frequently ask me if i’d be willing to share a list of my most essential wardrobe items. i’ve been thinking a lot about this lately and decided to pull together a list of my current must-have basics. i know none of these are especially cheap if purchased new, but you can find the vintage/thrifted version of many of the items on the list. the idea is that these are– for me– the cream of the crop! they’re all really good, quality items made with very nice materials that i find myself wearing over and over again. if i could only have these items in a variety of different colors, i would be a very happy camper.

do you have any wardrobe items you just can’t live without?

one of the things that’s nice about having this blog is that i can come back whenever i’m in the mood for inspiration to browse through all of my favorite collections. but there are so many cool looks coming out, that sometimes i have a hard time keeping up! which is why i’ve resolved to make my best effort to share all of the pretty collections that i find instead of just saving them onto my computer desktop only to be forgotten! case in point: the other day, rhiannon posted a few looks from the orla kiely resort 2012 collection and i got so excited that i just had to share my top picks! i’m planning a trip to hawaii this year, so i’ve been racking my brain about what fun looks i’ll be sporting while traipsing around oahu. i love that there’s this perfect mix of fun and easy sun dresses with very smart little coats so that i can transition back into the rainy spring weather that will be awaiting me when i return to the bay area. in some ways, it’s the reason why i love resort and pre-fall collections so much. they have the perfect mix of both seasons which is just right for us california kids. oh, and did i mention that many of these pieces are already available online?
