calivintage + project urban renewal: vintage street style

calivintage: street style at the alameda flea market

finally! another round of street style photos! for this set, i was contacted by the lovely ladies of project urban renewal, an upcoming collection of vintage apparel and accessories coming soon to urban outfitter’s space 15 twenty in los angeles. they had seen some of the photos i’d taken at the alameda flea market and asked if i’d be interested in doing a little guest post featuring some of the vintage styles i’ve seen there. since i go there every month to hunt for treasures, i was happy to bring my camera with me to look for new street style subjects. these photos were taken last month at the alameda point antiques faire, and if you like them, get excited, because i was just there again yesterday and got a huuuge set of new photos coming soon. but in the meantime, be sure to check out my guest post at space 15 twenty.

a house mouse

you may not know this, but i may have a slight affinity for crafty little projects. i feel like it sort of goes hand-in-hand with the lifestyle of a girl who would prefer to spend her weekends in thrift shops. looking at all of the bags of lace and buttons and odds-and-ends, i begin to imagine the possibilities for handmade items and start to collect bits of fabric and things in hopes of creating some sort of diy masterpiece. unfortunately, the reality is that i just have drawers and bags stuffed full of partially finished projects taunting and teasing me as i continue to set them aside for more tech savvy endeavors.

but i recently managed to throw together a very simple cat toy diy for the modcloth blog, where we are celebrating mewsweek, much to my delight! i had so much fun trying to snap photos of this little mousy with my cat momo, that i thought it would be fun to share the finished product with you! if you’re curious for the directions ,which were expertly illustrated by our graphic designer, mini, you can hop on over to modcloth!

with the autumn equinox only a few days past, i am happy to report that as per usual, san francisco offered us a nice rainy day to welcome the new season. so of course, i took the opportunity to wear one of my new comfy cozy fall outfits while wandering about in the mountain view cemetery. the sky was perfectly gray and gloomy, and the earth was still moist from the showers. i wore a black dress for the first time in a long time, and i loved the depth that it added to my look. i know that a basic jersey wrap dress such as this is a no brainer for many, but in all my life i’ve never owned such an essential basic, so i was very pleased when karen kane offered to send one along for me to try out. it’s the type of thing that you can mix and match with any combination of things, and it’s so perfectly soft and stretchy that you could practically live in it. needless to say, i’m quite happy to finally have it in my wardrobe! and as you’ll see when you begin to scroll down, i clearly had a good time prancing around in my silly, preppy fox hunter outfit, as is evidenced by the number of pictures we snapped! yikes!

family affairs fall 2011

calivintage: family affairs fall 2011

after yesterday’s post in my pretty new good spirits dress, i thought i might take a moment to share the rest of the family affairs fall 2011 collection, “meteorite dreams.” you may remember some of the pieces from this little sneak peek i posted back in february! ever since i laid my eyes on the collection, i had been dreaming of these pretty pieces. i love the starry print, metallic details, and decadent velvet and wool fabrics in easy, wearable cuts. often, when a collection like this comes out, i can imagine myself spending the whole season wearing each piece and living in the dreamy world it creates!

on saturday morning, i woke up bright and early with weekend plans to drive up to marin to enjoy the beautiful beginning of fall. i perched on my computer with a cup of coffee, as per usual, when an unexpected package arrived in the mail: this pretty pretty dress from nina of family affairs! i immediately threw it on and did a little dance in my apartment before heading out of town with brendan. we made our way to one of our favorite spots in san rafael, sol food. if you’re ever in the area, you need to stop by for the best puerto rican cuisine ever! this time, i tried ponche, a mix of iced tea and limeade, and i have been dreaming about it since! i need to head to the grocery store so i can make a huge jug of it to keep in my refrigerator, even if the weather is beginning to cool down!

then we meandered around the area, popping into local thrift stores and boutiques before taking a very scenic route partway up mt. tamalpais and through the california coastline. and, whenever we find ourselves up in the area, we always have to stop at another favorite restaurant, avatar’s! which, i know, as with sol food, i’ve mentioned it before, but you really have to try it if you find yourself in northern california. nothing beats their sweet potato punjabi enchiladas! and of course, we had to round out our very decadent day with a big cup of coffee for the drive home.

my nyfw: a visit with lauren moffatt

calivintage: lauren moffatt spring 2012

if you’ve been reading my blog for a little while, you’ll know that i am a huge fan of lauren moffatt. last year, i actually had a chance to visit the studio and to meet lauren moffatt herself! since then, we’ve stayed in touch, and when nyfw rolled around, she invited me to be a part of her fno event where we drank beers, ate hot dogs, and enjoyed the company of lovely people. once the frenzy of fno subsided, i went for another studio visit to preview the spring 2012 collection. she didn’t have a presentation this year, so i felt quite honored to be one of the few people to get a peek at her collection before the rest of the world! and i came armed with my camera so i could give you a little glimpse at what i saw!

my nyfw: oscar de la renta spring 2012

calivintage: oscar de la renta spring 2012

as i’m sure you’ve noticed by now, there’s a pretty steady trend in the shows that i attended during nyfw. i (as you would expect) generally lean towards vintage-inspired collections that are wearable and on the more affordable end of the spectrum in terms of designer clothing. but that isn’t to say that i don’t appreciate the more intricate and ornate work of designers like oscar de la renta. i had the pleasure of being able to attend the spring 2012 show and snagged a pretty awesome spot standing at the end of the runway, where i attempted to digest all of the beautiful details as they flew past. and there was a lot to take in: from the cool ’70s separates to the cinderella-esque ball gowns complete with ornate little slippers! i was delighted by the chartreuse hues, and charmed by the cute low-heeled sandals and clear vinyl booties. and that’s only scratching the surface.

i actually had the opportunity to visit the oscar de la renta studio back in febraury during fashion week, and got to see first-hand the amount of fine handwork that goes into each one of these incredible pieces. every time a model flew by on the runway, i was reminded of all the hard work and dedication that i had seen last season. so i don’t speak lightly when i say that it was truly an honor to have been able to experience such a beautiful show.

my nyfw: family affairs spring 2012 sneak peek!

calivintage: family affairs spring 2012 sneak peek!

after my fifth trip to new york for fashion week, i’ve begun to start forming a few traditions. one is that i usually spend the entire trip joined at the hip with rebecca of the clothes horse. and the other is that we always head over to brooklyn to visit the very charming nina of family affairs. she always greets us with a very warm welcome and invites us into her studio to drink coffee and eat treats before previewing her collection and playing a bit of dress up!

on this particular visit, she showed us a lovely rack full of fun and whimsical pieces that have got me wishing we could fast forward six months to spring 2012 so i can prance about on some silly boardwalk wearing all of her designs. she just shot the lookbook with maya of turned out, so i promise to share the rest of the collection soon! but for now, i thought i would show just a few photos from our visit as a little tease. don’t you just love her amazing vintage tiger flats? and i seriously can’t get enough of that pretty necklace, which is from her jewelry collection, toujours toi!

my nyfw: milly spring 2012

milly spring 2012

if color is what you were looking for, then you certainly found it at milly spring 2012. it was an explosion of amazing vintage prints in a color palette of saturated reds, blues, and greens tempered by a rich chocolate brown with smatterings of bright chartreuse and yellow. the models sported bright pepto bismol pink lips and orange fingertips with an array of retro glasses for a fun and flirty yet decidedly geek chic look. definitely taking cues from the ’60s with mod shapes and prints, i just couldn’t get enough of this retro-chic collection. i didn’t get close ups, but if you look at their lapels, you’ll notice the cutest selection of little brooch pins in the shape foxes and owls and other silly little animals.

while the styling was a bit much for some of these looks, i could definitely see why when faced with such an assortment of cool details. and as cute as those little printed heels were, i don’t think i’ll be trying out stilettos any time soon, but i certainly do love the collaboration with sperry top siders in the form of those darling boat shoe platform heels! all in all, this was one of my favorite collections at fashion week, and it was an honor to be in attendance. now i just can’t wait for spring to get my hands on some of these pieces!
