today is my first official day back after new york fashion week. i travelled all day yesterday, slept for ten hours, and am now back at the office. it’s going to take me a while to catch up, but in the meantime, i wanted to share a few shots i captured of anna wintour at the pamela love spring 2012 presentation. i just happened to walk up to take photos of the looks when i noticed a swarm of photographers swirling around this tiny woman with her iconic bob. i sort of gawked in awe as she took a spot directly in front of me before i snapped that picture above. i love that all you have to see is the back of her head to know exactly who she is.
my nyfw: suno spring 2012
last season, the suno fall collection was one of my favorites. i fell in love with a particular cala lilly print, and haven’t been able to get it out of my mind since. so this season, i was pretty excited about their new collection and their first runway show. i especially loved the crisp white and blue cotton pieces with plenty of clean lines and patterns, some beautiful lace cutwork, and expert layering. layers in spring can be especially tricky for spring, but they definitely did it right. my favorite look was the cotton geometric printed dress with the apron back. there were some other silk prints and metallics mixed in, but overall, i preferred the lighter colors. and let’s talk about the hair! i loved those perfectly messy updos! suno spring 2012, you are awesome.

my nyfw: behind the scenes at rachel antonoff spring 2012
i know that pretty much anything i write about during nyfw is probably going to be one of my favorites, but i can’t describe how fun and exciting it was to go behind the scenes at rachel antonoff’s spring 2012 presentation. i have gone to her last two shows, and have found them to be the most creative presentations at fashion week, hands down. so when i managed to arrange for photo and video coverage behind the scenes, i was over the moon.
we arrived as the models were getting their hair and makeup done, a la wednesday adams complete with pigtail pleats and smoky eyes. i interviewed the hair and makeup artists from cutler and mac to get the lowdown on the concept before meeting the lovely tennessee thomas, who was djing the event. then we had a chance meeting with mr. wendy, the adorable cat who has been a model in every one of her shows before meeting up with rachel antonoff herself. she even invited her adorable grandparents to see the collection! it was a wonderful time that i will not soon forget and it was a pleasure to be able to work on the video with the totally awesome jon brown, and to share my coverage with you here and on the modcloth blog (scroll down to watch)!

outfit: witchy woman
today i am interrupting your regularly scheduled nyfw programming to share a fun little outfit that i shot before i left for fashion week. today is the launch of the new karen elson for nine west vintage america collection, and i am pleased to be sharing one of her designs styled up in a very witchy outfit in honor of the occasion. these lace up boots definitely bring a bit of a ’90s grunge element to an outfit, and the shimmery black finish had me in the mood to conjure up a little black magic with darker colors and kitty heads. they’re definitely a fun pair of boots and i can already imagine up a few other ways to style them up!
one of the cool things about this collection (besides the fact that it was designed in collaboration with karen elson!) is that proceeds from the collection will support soles4souls, a charity that provides shoes to people in need. nine west has also let me know that beginning tomorrow, they will also be providing $1 to charity for each new facebook fan.

my nyfw: jill stuart spring 2012
since fashion week has started, i’m sure you’ve seen some sneak peeks of what i’ve been up to on tumblr, twitter, and instagram. but today i’m excited to begin sharing some of the photos i’ve been taking at the shows. one of my favorites so far was the jill stuart spring 2012 show. after having been mildly obsessed with the fall and resort collections, i was a little concerned that i’d built up the spring show too much in my mind. but once i saw the first look walk down the runway (see: the nude and red palm tree dress with a pleated and scalloped hem) i knew i was in for a treat. i loved the sort of art deco floridian theme with the palm tree motif and excellent colors. the pink and green in particular reminded me of the colors you might see in my great aunt’s bathroom, and i mean that in the best way possible. but besides the show-stopping colors, i loved the quilted jackets, which reminded me of glamorous vintage sleepwear, and i even caught a glimpse of what looked like little retro faces on the print of a dress. and of course, the gold details on the shoes and the perfectly messy side swept hair completed the looks. another collection well-done that i will be turning to for inspiration for months to come!

my nyfw: lauren moffatt
onto my outfit from day two here at new york fashion week. this is what i wore yesterday for another fun day. in the morning, i went to the rachel antonoff show to shoot behind-the-scenes video and interview rachel herself, the hair and makeup artists, and even tennessee thomas, who was the dj for the event (more to come later)! then i headed over to the gretchen jones presentation, and finished off the day at the lauren moffatt fno event.
i was very honored to have been on the roster for the event, and i can’t tell you how wonderful it was to meet all of the lovely ladies (and boys) who came out for the occasion. fashion’s night out can be a little crazy in new york, but this event was just right. it was in a small boutique with a cooler of beers and bbq hot dogs! definitely right down my alley. and of course, for the occasion, i had to wear my absolute favorite lauren moffatt dress. i know i’ve worn this dress on the blog before, but it’s really too good to share only once!

my nyfw: mod mod mod mod world
well, i successfully survived day one of new york fashion week! and here’s what i wore on day one. the rainy weather was a bit unexpected for me: when i checked the forecast before packing, there didn’t appear to be any threat of rain, but by the time i arrived, it was clear that we were going to be experiencing thunderstorms and several inches of rainfall. fortunately, i did manage to stuff my silly new raincoat (which i discovered reading le blog de sushi) into my luggage! i got a lot of compliments, despite the fact that i am essentially wearing a plastic bag. albeit a very retro fun and slightly chic one, haha! and it really was the perfect compliment to my pretty family affairs dress. and even more fitting were these epic hanging chairs in the main lounge at the lucky fabb conference. obviously a clear choice for an impromptu photo shoot.
and speaking of fashion week, stay tuned for a lot of posts. yesterday i went to the steven alan presentation and the rachel comey show, so more pictures are on the way! and than you to rebecca for taking these photos!

my nyfw: calivintage + lauren moffatt for fashion’s night out
so if you follow me on tumblr or twitter, you may have already seen this announcement. but i wanted to let you all know that if you’re going to be in new york for fashion week, then you should stop by poppy boutique during fashion’s night out for a chance to meet one of my favorite designers, lauren moffatt! and, as you can see by the image, i’m on the roster, too! i will be there enjoying beers, snacks, and shopping from 7 – 8pm, so i hope you can make it!
steven alan fall 2011
back in february, when i saw the photos from the steven alan fall 2011 collection, i knew it was going to be a long wait. i want so much of this collection that i’ve been checking the website every couple of days in anticipation of the arrival of my favorite pieces! and even picking out my favorites was a bit of a challenge. i love the mix of blanket stripes, simple florals, and smock tops, and i enjoy the varying lengths and silhouettes. it’s just the type of collection that is perfect for fall in northern california.
many of the pieces are already available online, so get to it!
outfit: 17 mile drive
more pictures from monterey! these were shot along the scenic 17 mile drive, which is basically a touristy little drive that loops around the area past the ocean and through a bunch of golf courses in a very wealthy area down in monterey. you pay to get in and they give you a little numbered map with silly locations like the “ghost tree!” i don’t have the little brochure, but it says something cheesy about how the dead trees have been bleached by the wind and sea. there were a lot of people mulling about snapping touristy pictures, so we decided to join in and get our own. despite the spectacle of it, i have to admit that this whole area is absolutely stunning. it brought back memories of some of the bike tours i’ve gone on that passed through this area and down into big sur along highway one. i read on a postcard once that someone famous referred to the area as the most beautiful convergence of land and sea…
