how quickly the month of june has passed right by… i can’t believe i’m almost done with my month of guest editing and styling at the live.love.LOFT. blog. tomorrow will be my last official post, and with it, will come a little surprise for you all! but first, i want to share with you one of the projects that i worked on with LOFT. it was a challenge to style up one piece four different ways. i’ve actually never done a post like this before, but i certainly love to wear my favorite pieces over and over, so i decided to try my hand at styling up the pleated sleeve ruffle neck blouse. it is one my favorite LOFT pieces this month, and i actually already styled it up in a teddy girl inspired look seen here. i’d worn it so much that i knew i could think up four more looks for all different occasions. in fact, i had so much fun styling up these outfits, that i think i might have to make this a more regular feature on my blog! so without further adieu, here’s what i came up with:

endless sundays

nope! this is not my sunday outfit, but rather, what i wore on monday morning. that’s the sun rising up behind me at approximately 7am. and as you can see, i got a trim to my pixie cut over the weekend! i had one of those endless sundays where i woke up and enjoyed a most delicious homemade breakfast of eggs and spinach on toast, complete with a few mimosas. then i made my way to san francisco to visit shannon to get my hairs trimmed before he leaves for vacation. of course, this turned into a hang out session at dolores park and an eventual stroll to the bar with friends once the sun went down. which of course, turned into a late night visit to the taqueria for an appropriately giant burrito. so please excuse me if i’m still recovering from my sunday of excess. phew!

guide to vintage bikes, part 1

after spending a considerable amount of time doing research for a vintage bike shopping guide, i finally decided that there are just too many great vintage bike options out there to put into one mega post, so instead, i’m breaking this up into several parts. these are obviously not the only bike options out there, but i’m focusing on bikes that are made with quality parts and materials that i expect will last you for years to come with the proper maintenance. you can obviously buy a vintage sears roebucks bike and have plenty of fun with it, but you don’t need me to tell you that! i’m also going to be focusing on upright and dutch style bikes because they are centered more around comfort and much easier to ride while wearing a mini skirt and heels than a more traditional road bike. it’s just my personal preference, though i will say that i ride both and that each has their own purpose.

for today, i’m starting with my absolute favorite vintage bikes: the raleigh superbe and the raleigh sports.

to give you a little background, the raleigh bicycle company was established in 1887 in nottingham, uk. they are one of the oldest bicycle companies in the world and they have a tradition of manufacturing beautiful and reliable bikes. they’re still in business today, but i much prefer their vintage bikes. if you’re lucky, you can find one at a local thrift shop or yard sale for as cheap as $20, but you can also expect to pay upwards of around $200 for one if you live in a more urban area where bikes are more common (i.e. san francisco or new york) or if it is in absolute mint condition.

one of the biggest factors for choosing a vintage bike is the quality of the materials and parts used on the bike. while raleigh certainly had many similar bikes (in appearance), the superbe and sports models were made with some of the best parts and materials. most commonly, you’ll find models made in the 1970’s, and i highly recommend them. they originally came with features such as reynolds tubing (this is steel, so it is heavy, but less so that your typical steel), sturmey archer hubs (the highest quality on the market even today), and brooks leather saddles. often times the saddle will be switched out with something more modern, but if the bike still has the saddle, then it’s a definite win since brooks leather saddles run upwards of $200 brand new!

now i know you’re probably thinking that these bikes must be rare or hard-to-find, but i was able to find a mint condition raleigh superbe with the original brooks saddle for $200 after searching for about a month on craigslist. it might be a bit more work than hopping into your local walmart, but trust me when i say that it’s definitely worth the search. these bikes are beautiful, reliable, and easy to get serviced! i recommend checking your local newspaper listings, craigslist, or ebay.

hello mr. fox: coffee
i love the ease and simplicity of this perfect summer outfit. silk blouse, casual shorts, and perfect oxfords paired with a killer clutch and sweet round sunglasses. it’s pretty much the best summer uniform ever.

vanessa jackman: running with the fashpack, australian fashion week 2010
this lovely lady has such excellent styling. the belted short sleeved jacket is so right for when the temperatures drop in the evening and i love her straight skirt with socks and wedge booties. this is a perfect example of transitional dressing while we wait for the weather to actually get hot here in the bay area!

hanneli mustaparta: brighter days, darker colors
it’s official, this is going to be the year that i find myself a cute floral romper. it takes off the edge and keeps you from looking like you belong in shop class and it makes just the perfect statement so all you’ll need are cute oxfords and a simple belt.

froufrouu: patient, aware
this outfit is so dead on! i love the combination of high rise khakis with the over-sized hat and clutch. and i think i need to get myself a pair of neutral kork-ease wedges like that! so perfect paired with dark socks!

the stylish heart: green machine
her styling is just lovely, but it’s amazing how that perfect shade of green shorts take it to completely new territory. a reminder that a pop of color is in order for the summer.

hoy fashion: topshop bandstand picnic, liverpool
with all of the neutrals we’ve been seeing lately, i didn’t realize how fresh it could be to don a pair of white shorts with a white top. and she keeps it perfectly cool with classic sunglasses and a killer pair of oxfords.

my history

after recently celebrating father’s day over the weekend and mother’s day last month, i decided that perhaps it was time to do another mi familia post today. i’ve done a few installations in the past including images of my mother’s side of the family from as long ago as the 1910’s seen here, here, and here. i was really delighted by the positive reception i received from them, particularly because i recognized that there isn’t a lot of representation of people of color in historical images of the united states unless it’s in the context of migrant farm workers or the civil rights movement. we don’t often get to see the more typical images like family portraits or snap shots at the park or on the beach. so i’m glad to be able to contribute my little collection to the public archive by posting them on my blog occasionally.and while we’re on the subject, i want to let you know that threadbared is calling for submissions for images of women of color in fashionable looks! they’re also looking for garments and accessories, newspaper articles, or other ephemera relating to women of color for a special fashion exhibition. click through for details on how to submit!i definitely intend to continue sharing more vintage images of my family on my blog as i unearth them, but in honor of my parents, today i thought it would be fitting to show you a few more recent images of my family. above from left: my mom, my dad, my dad’s sister/my godmother, and my mom’s brother/my nino. oh yes, and the little baby is me back in 1983, a few months after i was born. hehe, my mom is especially tiny at 4’11”. note the super tall wedges.

with my older sister, erica. i would just like to note that she is now 5’9″. apparently she got tall of the tall genes…

from left: erica (my older sister), devin (my younger brother), and me!
