it’s been a few seasons, but the new ymc spring 2014 collection really caught my attention. it started with that perfect navy eyelet dress above, and as i continued scrolling through the looks, i really started to appreciate the little details on these cool pieces. whether it’s a dip-dyed hem on a simple denim dress, or an unexpected space-dyed yarn on a comfy striped sweater, every look has something interesting and unexpected to offer.
family affairs spring 2014
a few months back, i posted a little preview of the family affairs spring 2014 collection that i shot on a particularly sweltering nyc day. as always, it was fun to share a peek at what was to come. and now that it is almost officially spring, i thought i’d share the official look book featuring some of my favorite family affairs standbys along with a really cute selection of fun little halters and bralettes for wearing on hot and hazy summer days by the lake. once again, designer nina produced her own hand-illustrated prints with a particularly cheeky pattern of red lips with tiny little braces on a toothy grin. of her inspiration, nina says:
this collection is inspired by the golden, sharp light of the southwest, salty, white walls at the port in marseille, italian ice cream parlors of the ’80s,picking strawberries on a swedish farm, hiding behind the greenery to make out, eating watermelon on an old fishing boat in biarritz, roller skating disco to the sounds of david bowie.
she has just released the collection right here!

elizabeth suzann spring 2014
i first discovered elizabeth suzann and her namesake nashville-based collection several months back. i took one look at her work and fell in love with the minimal aesthetic and fine fabrics, and after a few email exchanges, she so very sweetly sent me one of her dresses. unfortunately, i was pregnant at the time and my belly grew so rapidly that i had to banish it on my rack of clothes until i could finally fit back into it! over the weekend, i finally pulled it on with a crisp white t-shirt (instagram proof here) and now it is all i want to wear! and lucky me, she’s just released her new spring 2014 collection which is now available for preorder. and wouldn’t you know? after all of my recent swooning over jumpsuits, she’s designed the perfect one!

want: jumpsuits and overalls
i can’t seem to get my mind off of overalls. coveralls? jumpsuits? not the classic denim dungarees or engineer striped osh kosh we had as kids, but a slightly more grown-up one-piece that falls somewhere in the gray area between a jumpsuit and your typical bib and brace overalls. though it’s a bonus if there are actually braces you can fasten, since that makes a few of life’s functions a bit easier…
anyway, i particularly like these jumpers in light, summery fabrics like cotton gauze, linen, jersey, or even silk. my whole life, i never considered wearing them, but then i got this pair from lauren moffatt last spring, and they totally changed my sartorial world. now i want a pair for every day of the week! i haven’t yet found my dream pair, but these are a few options that i certainly wouldn’t mind owning.

adam: week 2
these photos were snapped on my 31st birthday when adam was ten days old. he’s wearing his little party hat! to celebrate, we had family over and we ate guisados tacos (best ever) and drank mimosas. well, i only had a sip of champagne since i was still loaded on pain medication from the c-section. after everyone left, i realized that i still hadn’t gotten a single photo of us together! i guess there are some shots of me on the operating table with him, but they’re not very glamorous.
i have a million more gems that i snapped during his second week of life, but i still haven’t found the time to edit them! in addition to sharing a few photos on my blog, i’m really hoping i can go through and select a few photos each week so i can actually get them printed. in this digital age, i am so worried that my computer will crash or i’ll somehow lose all of the photos if i don’t take the time to sort through and get some printed. same goes for all of the silly instagram outfit photos i’ve been taking. i need to look into a printing service for both so that adam will be able to look back and see these photos when he gets older!
hatch spring 2014
i may no longer be pregnant, but i still can’t keep my eyes off the new hatch spring 2014 collection. i think it’s my favorite to date! someone must have sent them the memo about how every pregnant woman looks awesome in stripes. i know i most frequently rotated between a striped pencil skirt and a breton stripe shirt during my pregnancy because they were soft and comfy, but still had an element of simple style. so of course, i really like these playful pieces for spring. in fact, i might actually buy a top or pair of pants to add to my wardrobe for spring!
outfit: weekend walks
i’ll tell you what, i don’t know how some bloggers post outfits like a week after their babies were born. i was down for the count for six weeks after my c-section, and the past couple of weeks, i just haven’t found the time! i attempted to get some photos over the weekend on a walk with the baby, but he started crying before we got anything worthwhile. my outfit wasn’t that interesting anyway. i’ve mostly been wearing a uniform of jeans with an oversized button-up and then adding or removing layers and accessories as necessary.
the nice part about my little hiatus is that i’ve been spending a lot of time thinking more practically and strategically about my wardrobe. it feels really good to be unloading so many of the clothes that i’ve been hoarding in my shop, and to start thinking about my own changing personal style. i’m definitely moving in a different direction now that i live in a new place and have a baby!

shop my closet: shoes
well, folks, the time has come. after driving myself crazy with the amount of clothes, shoes, and accessories i have stuffed into closets and shelves around my apartment, i’ve finally decided that it’s time to start the process of seriously downsizing my wardrobe. i honestly don’t wear most of what i own, and i’ve decided that there’s no reason for all of this perfectly good stuff to just hang around collecting dust in my closet. so for the next several weeks, i’ll be catching time while adam naps and adding new items to the calivintage shop whenever i can. for the first round, i’ve got a bunch of shoes (used and vintage) up for sale.
but just so you know, i’ve already photographed a bunch of boots that are soon to be added, and am going to be parting with some manolo blahniks and a crazy pair of celine wedges as well. hopefully i’ll be able to start going through my clothes and accessories this weekend… i promise to post an update on my blog whenever i add more stuff so you guys will be the first to know about it!

family affairs fall 2014
this season was the first time in a few years that i wasn’t able to visit nina in her studio to preview the latest collection during fashion week. it was hard to be away, but she sent me the images from the family affairs fall 2014 lookbook, which served as a bit of consolation. the collection, titled “milk and honey,” was inspired by:
“tea dances in london when you are wearing your patent leather dancing shoes for the first time, marguerite duras’ melancholy romance, silent movie stars in underwater films, witch potions and mornings listening to records in bed while it snows outside. “
i love the other-wordly vibe of this shoot and collection. for the prints, nina created her own alchemy symbols referencing irish fairytales and italian futurism. it’s a fun mix of references. there are plenty of sweet dresses, but i’m also really enjoying the addition of high-rise trousers and some really cool oversized blazers for the season.

mom jeans
i suppose this is a rather fitting subject considering that i am now actually a mom. which means that whenever i wear any pair of jeans, they can technically qualify as “mom jeans.” but more specifically, i’m talking about old-school, high-rise, tapered leg denim. i know i’m not the first or last to talk about such a ground-breaking subject (in fact, i just read a pretty funny dissection of #normcore on the cut earlier this week). but whatever, i’ve been hoarding inspiration photos of said jeans for a few years and decided to share some of them since i recently purchased a nice pair of slim-fitting asos farleigh mom jeans that i’ve been wearing almost every day lately. they have a cool retro vibe that hearkens back to the ’90s, which i hear is popular with the kids these days.
i could go on about how it seems silly to call a classic pair of levi’s a “trend.” but it’s silly to even point that out. we’ve all read article after article about things as ground-breaking as bold red lipstick. or how pink is totally “in” this season. and on the subject of jeans, you’ve got your “boyfriend jeans” and your “dad jeans,” why not append another silly label to what is essentially a pair of standard 501s? so excuse me while i go put on my mom jeans. coz i’m a mom now, duh.
