vintage festival fashion

there’s been plenty of talk about coachella and the season of summer music festivals lately. while i don’t have plans to attend anything besides our local outside lands fest in san francisco this august, i still enjoy searching through photo archives trying to get a glimpse at what those first festivals in the 1960’s must have been like. there were no street style photographers lurking about looking for fashionable ladies in cut off shorts and flower headbands, but there certainly was some pretty impeccable style worn by the popular musicians of the time. this is only a small selection and i know i’m leaving out a ton of people, but i thought i’d share some of the inspiration i collected while pulling together my first regular column for polyvore. each month, i’ll be finding a vintage photograph and recreating the look with modern pieces, so head on over to polyvore and check it out!

yestadt millinery spring 2013

if you ask me, the world just doesn’t have enough hats. which is why i’m always delighted when yestadt millinery releases a new lookbook. for spring 2013, they created a perfect range of styles from classic pagalina straw fedoras to cute printed baseball caps to some very special vintage-inspired toppers like that darling straw beret above! of the inspiration behind the collection, molly yestadt says,

“the spring collection started with the color palette- like chalky sherbert- we were looking at the warhol cat illustrations for color and also [one of his] illustrations of hardboiled eggs. so strange, but so lovely. kind of taking that kitschy grandmas-kitchen-artwork vibe and mixing it in with the yestadt millinery ‘downtown’ aesthetic.”

with that kind of inspiration, you sort of can’t go wrong. and lucky for me, yestadt is currently building an online shop, but if you can’t wait, they’ve also let me know that a selection of hats are currently available at opening ceremony, dagny+barstow, and anthropolgie.

tba spring 2013

i am obsessed with this dress. i think i first came across it while (you guessed it) scrolling through pinterest, and crossed my fingers as i clicked the link waiting to see if it was 1. available and 2. in my price range. and i was delighted to see that it was from the tba spring 2013 collection. i remember last spring, they came out with a slightly similar sheer white dress with scallops in a mini length. i was always kinda bummed that i never got it, but this pretty thing is definitely making me feel better about that. and for that matter, i’m pretty delighted by much of their spring offerings over at tba. the sheer skirts are definitely my favorites, but they have a lovely assortment of prints and textures in very easy shapes that are perfect for wearing while lazing about on a hot summer day.

beachy

calivintage_0294

still slowly easing my way back into the real world post vacation. things are crazy busy with life plans, work, blogging, etc. instead of boring you with the details, i’ll just share this quick snapshot of my loeffler randall starla sandals on the beach, so while i dive in to my mountain of work, i’ll have beachy scenes floating around in the back of my mind…

family affairs spring 2013

it may be a bit gloomy and rainy on my return from spring vacation, but the family affairs spring 2013 collection is brightening my mood in anticipation of may flowers. the collection is titled “night train to cassis” and features a host of hand-drawn prints fashioned after original drawings by nina herself. and as always, the inspiration is as dreamy as the looks. of the collection, nina says,

“the feeling of night train to cassis is innocence, pure fun, the color white in the sunlight, white houses in greece, sun bleached towels, putting lemon in your friends’ hair to “bleach” it, never remembering to drink enough water. taking overnight train rides to port towns in france, riding your bike too fast and laughing. fresh bread and home made jam, grass stains from all day picnics, salty hair.”

april foolin’

a couple of weeks back, i had the pleasure of filming a silly april fool’s video for modcloth. while part of my job description does include instagram strategy, i promise you, my days are not spent wandering around the office looking for cute photos. but i did think it would be fun to create a little mockumentary about my job at modcloth, and i have to admit i did kind of enjoy terrorizing my co-workers and poking fun at my silly fashion + tech industry world for a day.

alas, my salary is not dedicated to the sole purpose of finding the best instagram photos, though now that i think of it, i did get approval to run around with our videographer (shout out to jon brown) all day shooting this video…

outfit: kauai kitsch

traveling to such a tropical vacation locale like hawaii has many perks: the weather is amazing, the landscape is lush and wild, and you get to pull out all of your most garish clothes to wear unashamedly while lounging poolside drinking mai tai’s. just before i left for my trip, i made a bold step and bought my first hawaiian print dress. much the way i once thought leopard print was too overdone, i’ve always avoided cliche hawaiian prints in favor of more subtle fare. but if there is any time to let go of silly rules, it’s when you’re on vacation in hawaii. so this is my tourist outfit, complete with all of the kitschy themes i could think of: straw baseball cap (a visor would have been pretty awesome, too), bold tropical print, clear plastic espadrilles, and a shade of occ lip tar aptly named ‘grandma.’

parker barker for lime ricki swimwear

since we’ve been on the topic of hawaii this week, today i thought it would be fitting to share with you the new parker barker for lime ricki swimwear collection. this small, vintage-inspired collection was designed by hayler parker-barker, the talented lady behind the children’s clothing line, culdesac. and this season, she’s added swimwear to her roster of design with a very charming collection of swimsuits inspired by vintage silhouettes in ’60s hollywood. i haven’t yet had a chance to go swimming on my trip, but i may just have picked out one of these suits for when i finally do hit the beach… and there may be a nice treat in store for you later this week, so stay tuned!
