win $500 from woolite x polyvore!

if you’ve been reading my blog for a while (or heck, even if you just stumbled upon it for the first time today), then you know that i have a deep love for all things vintage. my closet is bursting with vintage treasures picked up at thrift shops, vintage boutiques, and flea markets. i like to imagine that if these old rags could talk, they’d each have their own beautiful, rich history to tell. and when i buy a vintage piece, i almost feel honored to be able to continue writing that story. each item feels so special and unique, that sometimes i find myself saving my best vintage for only the most special occasions. i don’t want my prized possessions to rip or fade or disintegrate, but i still want to be able to enjoy them. so of course i always take care and wash them gently so that they will last for many more years to come.

one brand that understands the needs of our most delicates is woolite. and today they’ve asked me to help them host their latest contest in partnership with polyvore. simply create a polyvore collage featuring one of your favorite vintage finds to be entered for a chance to win $500! i’ll be judging the contest myself, and i can’t wait to see the pretty collages that you come up with! click here for the official details!

family affairs fall 2012

i know it was only a couple of weeks ago that i was giving you a sneak peek of the upcoming family affairs spring collection, but today i’d like to step back and enjoy our current season with a look at family affairs fall 2012 which has just launched online. i am particularly infatuated with the super ’60s leather frankie skirt, and am also eying that darling lourdes tunic (which conveniently for me will work as a dress)! this whole collection is so pretty and easy to wear. i love her introduction of quirky animal prints and i’m happy that she brought back a few favorites in updated colorways. all in all, another beautiful collection filled with cozy pieces for fall.

outfit: houndstooth

calivintage: houndstooth

when i pulled on this silly houndstooth dress for the first time, i immediately found myself singing the brady bunch theme song in my head. isn’t it so perfectly ’70s kitsch? not sure how much it comes across on my blog, but lately i’ve been obsessed with everything late ’60s/early ’70s. so of course, this dress immediately jumped out at me… despite the fact that it is houndstooth. a little known fact about me is that i went to culinary school and am a certified pastry chef. many moons ago, i worked in bakeries decorating cakes and making sweet little tarts and eclairs and things. but i also had to wear these really awful houndstooth chef’s pants. for years, i avoided the print because of those terrible pants. but switch it to purple and throw it on a dolly dress, and we’ve been reunited like old friends.

hosting the lulu*s style studio!

calivintage: lulu's style studio

as promised, i have a bunch of photos from the lulu*s style studio event in phoenix! the evening was tons of fun and a total success! lulu*s set up at monorchid gallery complete with a pop-up shop, booths from a bunch of great sponsors, and the ‘spin it to win it’ wheel where attendees got to spin the wheel for a chance to win sweet lulu*s swag. i hosted a styling event in which i picked out a group of girls from the crowd and challenged them to each style a head-to-toe look. they were all so adorable that we let each of them walk away with one item that they were wearing and one lucky gal got to keep her entire look! then my co-host for the evening, mara of m loves m, gave a presentation featuring her favorite fall trends.

it was such a pleasure to meet mara and all of the fashionable bloggers of phoenix! everyone i met was so genuine, down-to-earth, and just wonderful to be around. in fact, thanks to the wonders of the internet, i was actually able to meet up with chelsea of tea talk and lauren of phoenix, je t’aime (pictured above) to do a little bit of exploring in the neighborhood. we stopped in at butter toast vintage where i picked up two adorable dresses and cute ’60s shoes on the cheap (see proof here and here). it was a really fun experience and the saddest part was that my trip was so short! i’m already trying to plan another trip to check out all of the awesome vintage and thrifting and to visit my mom in tucson, so hopefully i’ll be seeing arizona again very soon!

calivintage on sweden’s next top model!

another project that i’ve been waiting to share for months on end is my guest appearance on sweden’s next top model! this was filmed last winter at a vintage shop in los angeles and aired this past season on tv3 in sweden. i knew that it had aired, but hadn’t seen the episode until a few days ago when my sleuthing aunt and sister tracked it down on youtube. i have to admit, i was really worried about how it would come out because i was deathly sick with a very bad cold on the day this was filmed, and could barely form a complete sentence after all the medicine i took, but i think it came out pretty cute all said and done.

since the video is a bit long and it’s mostly in swedish, you can fast-forward to my segment at about the 3:15 mark. they were kind enough to speak english for my part, but i have no idea what is being said in the rest of it. maybe one of my kind swedish readers can offer up a translation!?

a huge thank you to the people at acne production for making this possible, and here’s to more fun video adventures!

the great indoors by calivintage on polyvore

we’ve started the slow transition to fall, and i’ve been changing gears and getting used to the idea of wearing layers and curling up on the couch next the space heater to enjoy the great indoors.

arizona bound!

as you read this, i’m boarding a plane and making my way to phoenix, arizona for lulu’s style studio! i’m really excited to be hosting the event and can’t wait to meet all of the fashionable ladies of phoenix! so make sure you r.s.v.p. right here and i’ll see you tonight!

trend: mellow yellow

this week, instead of doing my usual weekly roundup, i thought i’d change things up a bit and share some favorite recent photos featuring my favorite color. i’ve always been drawn to rich mustard and yellow hues. the only catch is that i actually have a pretty hard time wearing it myself because it often ends up matching my skin tone a bit more than i’d like… so while i stick to mustard accent pieces, i can sit back and enjoy these inspirational outfits from afar.
