24_heroes_entrance

after posting the 1970s-era tennis-inspired boast lookbook last week, i received a little tip off to another sporty selection of photographs styled by the folks over at need supply. this wes anderson-inspired editorial features a ton of my favorite designers, playfully styled with just the right amount of sporty prep.

wren summer 2012

IMG_6304

it just so happens to be raining outside this morning, but that isn’t keeping me from planning out my summer outfits! they’ll all be lined up in my closet, ready for the warmer weather. one such collection that i could easily see making an appearance in my wardrobe is the wren summer 2012 collection.

shot by jeana sohn of closet visit, this collection was inspired by travels to the southwest and a visit to frank lloyd wright’s taliesin west house. i was drawn to the colors and rich textures of the environment and wanted to translate these ideas into my designs.” -melissa coker, wren.

these easy pieces range from cool ikat prints to stunning solid pieces in bright orange, coral, white, and blue. and i love the very simple styling by giorgia tramontano with an old pair of tassle oxfords and cool shades.

i remember several summers ago before i started my blog, i would spend almost every day wearing one of many little mexican wedding dresses i’d collected over the years. i was drawn to them after seeing a haunting image of my mom as a teenager standing in her backyard wearing a softly glowing full length dress covered in embroidered flowers. she’d picked it up on a trip to visit family in mexico, a story she would tell from time to time involving bus rides with squawking chickens, and a month without the modern convenience of regular showers and safety razors, in which her armpits grew fuzzy.

so perhaps it’s no surprise that i find myself so drawn to this cute embroidered dress, a lovely gift from lauren moffatt that was waiting for me at my hotel when i arrived in new york for fashion week this february. it evokes just a hint of those ever-popular 1970s frocks, but with a much more modern update. i love the peter pan collar and low back, and i love that i can simply throw it on with a pair of sandals and call it a day.

boast lookbook

IMG_1891

my love of vintage and classic pieces means that despite my decidedly working class upbringing, i’ve always been secretly in love with all things preppy. and while i’ve never stepped foot in a country club, i can’t resist a good polo shirt or a cute tennis skirt, especially with an undone edge. which is why i have fallen head-over-heels for the boast lookbook.

“created in 1973 by the greenwich, ct field club’s tennis pro, bill st. john, boast has always been the brand for those on the outside of the inside.

until now, boast was only available in country club pro shops around the country. now, all sport enthusiasts and fans of the brand are able to purchase the iconic boast polo and more at boastusa.com.”

they’re essentially a polo shirt company with a cheeky logo, but i just love the way they pulled together this shoot. the looks were inspired by the same american tennis players of the ’70s that inspired the character of richie tennenbaum in the royal tenebaums. i actually had quite a bit of fun flipping through the vintage photos on the boast facebook page featuring furry, sweat band-clad men. anyway, the lookbook photos evoke an irreverent class of jocks, lounging court-side sipping bloody mary’s over a morning game of tennis. makes me wanna pull on an aran sweater and a pair of aviators for a little match.

outfit: polaroid

calivintage: instamatic

i’ve had so much fun snapping photos with instagram these days, that i recently found myself reminiscing about those pre-digital camera days of my youth when we took pictures of birthday parties and vacations with a silly little 35mm point-and-shoot camera and our trusty polaroid instamatic. the latter of which i actually kept well into adulthood until it fatefully exploded in the hot trunk of my car. and then polaroid cameras sort of disappeared for a little while, and then reappeared on the market when i wasn’t looking. not sure how long they’ve been around now, but i just picked up a polaroid 300. it snaps these tiny little pictures similar to the fuji instax, and i’ve been carrying it around with me in my backpack, only to keep it there because i’m somehow stingy about paying over $1 per photo when i can take pictures with my iphone for “free.” this is especially funny since i’ve been known to blow obscene amounts of cash on photo booths…

anyway, i finally stocked up on film and decided i might as well have some fun with it.

yestadt millinery fall 2012

Screen Shot 2012-04-03 at 9.34.44 AM

if you’ve been following me for a while on this blog, then you know i love a good hat. i definitely go through phases when i wear them more or less often, but if you step into my closet, you’ll find the top of a huge shelf stacked high with vintage hats.  so when the yestadt millinery fall 2012 lookbook arrived in my inbox the other day, i was pretty darn excited to see what they’d come up with this season. and yet again, they have such a beautiful selection of finely crafted hats with a vintage aesthetic that’s got me swooning. i’ve been lusting after the perfect little beret-inspired topper, and i’m pretty sure my hunt is over! throw in a chic little baseball cap, that epic lavender number, and perhaps a classy fedora, and i’m sold!

rachel antonoff spring 2012 lookbook

535594_10150590888945927_49084570926_9237362_2065306595_n

you may remember the photos (and video) that i posted several months back featuring the rachel antonoff spring 2012 presentation during new york fashion week (though if you don’t, i highly recommend you check it out because it was my favorite presentation of the season!) after patiently waiting for the spring season to hit stores, the lookbook is finally out. and if you’re a fan of arrested development, then you might get a kick out of the model, mae whitman, who was george michael’s girlfriend in the show. she’s also featured alia shawkat (maebe funke) in previous lookbooks, which is pretty delightful if you’ve rewatched every episode of arrested development a million times like me!

anyway, it’s nice to be able to see all of the pieces displayed in this spooky setting. and i’m more excited than ever to be able to wear spring dresses just like these. and if that’s not enough, you can also check out my photos from the rachel antonoff fall 2012 presentation here or take a peek at her current collaboration with bass shoes here. i already placed a preorder for the clear vinyl espadrilles!

refinery29 the perfect outfit

just wanted to share a couple of recent tidbits of press! first up: yesterday one of my outfits was featured on refinery29! and a couple of weeks ago, they also recently posted about my bike video collaboration with public bikes! refinery29 has long been one of my daily reads, so it’s been lovely to be featured on such an awesome site. it was so nice when i arrived at the office yesterday morning with smiling coworkers informing me that i had popped up in their inboxes. it made my monday!

refinery29 public bikes

the bold italic

another lovely feature came in the form of this delightful piece on local san francisco fashion bloggers by the bold italic. this online magazine has some seriously great content and a wonderful aesthetic, so i was over the moon when they asked to interview me for the feature. you can read my answers to their questions and learn about more bay area bloggers right here!

audrey grace illustration

and last but not least, i was both interviewed and illustrated in the recently released audrey grace magazine. you can read my interview on page 31 and see a very lovely illustration of me by natasha thompson on page 86 alongside some other very awesome bloggers. seriously a pleasure to have been included!
