my nyfw: a visit with family affairs

thought i’d share a few snapshots from a recent visit with nina of family affairs. nina is actually one part of the mother-daughter duo behind family affairs. she designs each collection with her loving mother, and splits her time working between her hometown in zurich and her brooklyn abode. the clothes are all produced in new york, but she usually holds her presentations in switzerland, so it’s nice for me to be able to stop by to peek at the clothes and chat about the latest collection while i’m in town.

chloÁ« sevigny for opening ceremony fall 2013

i’m back from new york fashion week, and while i still have a few more of my personal photos to share, i thought i’d take a quick break to show a collection that i wish i had seen in person! i didn’t go to the presentation, but i saw a smattering of photos on instagram feeds and immediately wished i had been there! the chloÁ« sevigny for opening ceremony fall 2013 collection was inspired by youthquakers in the 1960s, but you could also see very strong ’90s influences in those big platform clogs and baby barettes, trends i can recall when i was growing up in that era. a bit of the french new wave bad girl mixed with cher horowitz. pretty much right down my alley.

my nyfw: karen walker fall 2013 runway

i’ve been a little obsessed with karen walker these days, so i was pretty darn excited to get to attend her fall 2013 runway show. the collection, titled “new rose” drew inspiration from uk music scene in the late ’70s, citing the damned and siouxsie sioux as influences. the collection was a mix of utility and romance, and i have to say i found myself drawn to the pretty pieces tucked beneath big tweed coats.

my nyfw: tocca fall 2013 presentation

the tocca fall 2013 presentation was set on a haunting stage, a pitch black room with a singular spotlight shining on a floral installation in the center of the room. the girls walked in one by one, sporting luxurious silk dresses in black, blush pink, and navy with stunning houndstooth coats and big floral fascinators. the intricate details were subtle in their effect, but certainly drew the right amount of attention.

samantha pleet fall 2013

and since i’m terrible at keeping secrets, here’s a better look at the samantha pleet fall 2013 collection! this season, sam was inspired by picasso’s harlequins, schiele’s muses, and bauhaus design. and you can certainly see the inspiration in those beautifully ruffled collars and fringed details. she has a beautiful silk print, a reproduction of one of her watercolor paintings, which i particularly love on a full-length dress featuring her signature twists. i’m also pretty much certain that i need that velvet shift dress, embroidered with little hearts and spades!

my nyfw: a visit with samantha pleet

one of my favorite things to do while i’m in new york for fashion week, is to visit some of my favorite designer’s studios. this season, samantha pleet invited me into her brand new space for a little sneak peek at her upcoming fall 2013 collection. i have the entire look book to share with you, but first, i wanted to share a few photos of her studio. i always love getting a peek at the places where people do their creative work. samantha shared this little watercolor palette, a piece of art leftover after painting pretty pictures, which served as a print for some of her dreamy silk dresses.

i went with a few blogger babes (see emily and emma below), which turned out to be pretty awesome because everyone started playing dress up with the collection, kinda like having our own private fashion show.

my nyfw: lauren moffatt fall 2013 presentation

one of the shows that i have come to anticipate the most during new york fashion week is lauren moffatt. though her line has been around for over 10 years, she just recently started showing during nyfw last year with a school-girl themed lineup for fall 2012. the following season, she brought us outdoors with a tennis-chic selection for spring 2013, and now she’s taking us to the catskill mountains with a very woodsy fall 2013 collection. her attention to detail, down to her adorable invites, always keeps me captivated. as the models hopped onto their little log platforms, i could find myself getting just as excited as if it were my first show, trying to contain my oohs and ahhs over those bold chevron dresses, fun prints, and pretty coats. she even had little matching handwarmers!

and the whole collection couldn’t have come at a better time as i just got back from a very dreamy trip to big sur that left me longing to go back again. a little woodland retreat right here in new york.

my nyfw: whit fall 2013 presentation

and new york fashion week has begun! one of my first shows this season was the whit fall 2013 presentation at the w hotel. the collection was inspired by ’60s icon, marianne faithful, which is definitely right down my alley! i was immediately struck by the cute v-neck pinafores layered over pretty blouses and loved the cool paisley prints mixed with plaid, leopard print, and stripes. now my only regret is that i didn’t get more pictures!

colenimo spring 2013

today i’d like to thank the internet yet again for introducing me to the colenimo spring 2013 collection. i am in love with the crisp and clean lines with sporty sailor vibes and slouchy silhouettes. everything feels to effortless and chic, with girly details that never feel the least bit cutesy. the balance is so perfect that it makes me want to go clean out my closet and fill it with everything from this collection.
