my nyfw: samantha pleet in her studio

on my very last morning in new york, i packed up my bags and made one last trip to visit samantha pleet in her chelsea studio. her and her husband patrick have such a knack for design that they’re pretty much surrounded by beautiful things at all times. and as you can see, their studio is no exception. filled to the brim with plants and books and remnants from their spring 2014 shoot, it’s almost like stepping into a little private paradise while getting to preview the collection and peek at her latest collaboration with wolverine 1,000 mile. samantha herself exemplifies her customer so well that i asked her if she’d model a few pieces from her new collection for me before i headed back home.

if you like what you see, samantha pleet recently launched a web shop, where you can currently pick up some of the pieces from her new fall collection!

my nyfw: tocca spring 2014

the first show i attended when i arrived in new york last week was tocca spring 2014. i always look forward to emma fletcher’s whimsical designs and delicate details, and this collection was no exception. this season, she took inspiration from ballet dancers with pretty ruffled details, cute tap shorts, and a really lovely selection of high rise cigarette pants that i wish i could wear right now! there was also a beautiful range of sheer silk gowns, but i always prefer the more wearable daytime looks. in particular, i am a bit obsessed with the polka dot top and suspender skirt photographed above.

my nyfw: candela spring 2014

i know it’s the weekend, but i just couldn’t wait to share my photos from the candela spring 2014 presentation. you know i’m a huge fan of anything nautical, so my heart skipped a beat when i stepped into the room to see this elaborate set before my eyes. designer gabriella perezutti stuck with her romantic twist with plenty of lace and ruffles, but she also introduced bold color-blocked patterns fashioned after nautical flags. the stunner for me was a haunting, vintage-inspired eyelet dress fit for the figurehead of a lonely ship lost at sea.

my nyfw: honor spring 2014

yesterday marked the official first day of fashion week, and boy was it a big one! i attended a handful of shows, but if i had to pick a favorite, it would definitely be honor spring 2014. i was so bummed that i missed their show last season that i was determined to make it this time. and i am so glad that i did! last season was all about clean lines and bold colors, but this time it was all about the intricate details. it was one of those shows that gets your heart all aflutter as you see each dreamy piece float down the runway almost faster than your poor brain can even compute. it was a huge collection set against a forested wonderland with enough evening gowns to make you wish you were cinderella at the ball. believe it or not, there were more looks than i am sharing here, but i wasn’t quick enough to catch them all. in particular, i loved the slim cigarette pant suits with matching cropped jackets and the showstopper for me was a certain baby blue gown covered in fluffy thistledown puffs. swoon!

my nyfw: rachel comey fall 2013 runway

i can’t believe it was only a little over a week ago that i was sitting at the rachel comey fall 2013 runway. the show was set to a live soundtrack, with a performance by blonde redhead as the models stomped down the runway looking tough and confident with a slightly subversive edge. the girls all sported short cropped ‘dos and a series of bondage-inspired t-strap heels, an unexpected counterpart to the menswear-inspired looks.

my nyfw: steven alan fall 2013 presentation

steven alan has become a bit of a staple in my wardrobe, particularly since they opened up a few shops in san francisco, which i frequently visit on the hunt for luxurious basics. the formula might be simple, but it’s always done right. and this season at the fall 2013 presentation, there was a certain cool girl aesthetic that got me yearning to do one of those wardrobe clean-outs and pare things down to only the easiest of pieces. i loved the casual undone vibe in some of the slouchier silhouettes, and really appreciated a particular leather skirt paired with a pinstripe blazer, and was falling all over myself for those cute velvet pieces and fun riding hats. the collection was definitely understated, but certainly one i’ll be waiting for in the stores!

my nyfw: a visit with family affairs

thought i’d share a few snapshots from a recent visit with nina of family affairs. nina is actually one part of the mother-daughter duo behind family affairs. she designs each collection with her loving mother, and splits her time working between her hometown in zurich and her brooklyn abode. the clothes are all produced in new york, but she usually holds her presentations in switzerland, so it’s nice for me to be able to stop by to peek at the clothes and chat about the latest collection while i’m in town.

my nyfw: karen walker fall 2013 runway

i’ve been a little obsessed with karen walker these days, so i was pretty darn excited to get to attend her fall 2013 runway show. the collection, titled “new rose” drew inspiration from uk music scene in the late ’70s, citing the damned and siouxsie sioux as influences. the collection was a mix of utility and romance, and i have to say i found myself drawn to the pretty pieces tucked beneath big tweed coats.

my nyfw: tocca fall 2013 presentation

the tocca fall 2013 presentation was set on a haunting stage, a pitch black room with a singular spotlight shining on a floral installation in the center of the room. the girls walked in one by one, sporting luxurious silk dresses in black, blush pink, and navy with stunning houndstooth coats and big floral fascinators. the intricate details were subtle in their effect, but certainly drew the right amount of attention.

my nyfw: a visit with samantha pleet

one of my favorite things to do while i’m in new york for fashion week, is to visit some of my favorite designer’s studios. this season, samantha pleet invited me into her brand new space for a little sneak peek at her upcoming fall 2013 collection. i have the entire look book to share with you, but first, i wanted to share a few photos of her studio. i always love getting a peek at the places where people do their creative work. samantha shared this little watercolor palette, a piece of art leftover after painting pretty pictures, which served as a print for some of her dreamy silk dresses.

i went with a few blogger babes (see emily and emma below), which turned out to be pretty awesome because everyone started playing dress up with the collection, kinda like having our own private fashion show.
