want: candela millicent dress

3

i first saw this dress at the candela spring 2014 presentation back in september. and i kid you not, i haven’t been able to get it out of my mind since. what’s more is that i had to go and check the candela site only to discover that it’s now on sale. sitting there, taunting and teasing me in all of it’s impractical glory, begging for a reason to be bought. i try to imagine just hanging it on my wall, tossing it on to lounge around the house on lazy afternoons, or wearing it while i frolic in a field of flowers in the hazy setting sunlight. a girl can dream, can’t she?

peter jensen resort 2015

and oh how i love to see the peter jensen twist on his latest muse. this season, he focused on yoko ono, and i have to say, even without knowing very much of her work, the whole thing is quite a visual treat. yes, right down to the orthopedic granny socks.  i love the way jensen can really tow the line between wearable pieces and conceptually interesting collections. i wouldn’t be so bold as to wear one of these looks head to toe, but i certainly wouldn’t mind taking a few cues. and i certainly don’t mind picking apart all of the different references to ono and her body of work, either.

for the new dad

i’ve been buying father’s day gifts for my dad since i was a little kid, but this year there’s a new dad to celebrate! it’s so funny to now add the title of dad to my partner brendan. i want him to feel special for his first father’s day, especially because he’s hardly had a moment to himself between work, finishing grad school, and taking care of our new little baby dude. so when east dane asked me if i’d like to pull together a father’s day gift guide, i knew right away that it’d be dedicated to brendan and all of those first time dads out there who need a special treat.

oliver people’s gregory sunglasses – he’s been meaning to get a cool pair of sunglasses for ages, but never seems to wanna bite the bullet when we’re out shopping!

gitman vintage tiger tiger shirt – it’s always good to have a little bit of fun with your clothes after work and on the weekends. i know brendan would like the subtle, yet playful design on this cool short-sleeve shirt.

the golden age of dc comics – brendan is a serious comic book nerd. i know he’s more of a marvel man, but i think he’d have fun flipping through this coffee table book.

sperry topsider classic boat shoes – just the other day, brendan was commenting that he wore through his favorite top siders. sometimes a practical gift is the best kind.

form function form button stud timex minute man watch – watches are by far my best stand-by when it comes to giving brendan a gift. this man loves his watches and has a box full of different straps to switch out to change their look.

scotch & soda striped swim trunks – these would go great along with a little poolside date.

brooks b17 saddle – we’ve gone on countless bike tours together over the years. even though we don’t get to ride bikes nearly as much as we used to, i think this would be a nice, sentimental gift.

herschel supply co. backpack – don’t make daddy carry around a silly diaper bag! this backpack is a way better option for both parents, don’t you think?

everlane denim & poplin

the latest selection from everlane could not have come at a better time. i’ve been obsessed with really sturdy fabrics like cotton and denim and have pretty much been wearing white, navy, and denim almost every day this spring. it’s a clean palette, it’s practical, and it feels very chic, especially when you’re a new mom trying to pull yourself together and look presentable. i already have the box shirt in white and navy, but these new sleeveless and short sleeve shirts are going to be perfect as the heat of the summer sets in. and i’m pretty sure i need the shirtdress in all three colors. it’s like they say, “every summer outfit you want is here.”

no bangs

i’m not saying i’m going to grow out my bangs, but while going through super old inspiration folders the other day, i came across a few looks that tempted me for the first time in five years. back before i started blogging, i briefly sported almost the exact same look as above, complete with nerdy glasses and a black headband. total coincidence. but i’ve always kept that image tucked away to remember.

the thing is, i have a really big forehead. i’m not trying to be self-deprecating, those are just the facts. so having bangs is a nice way to balance out my face. and i can pull off really blunt and angular cuts, so that’s usually my default. but sometimes you just want a change, you know?

ah the age old debate. to bang or not to bang, that is the question.

margaret howell spring 2014

012

oh to be the woman decked out in all margaret howell. i have long been a fan of the iconic designer, but somehow haven’t written much about her on my blog over the years. part of it has to do with the fact that even though i love the style, it hasn’t always been the way i dress myself. until more recently, when i want everything i wear to be this kind of classic, menswear-inspired, nautical-themed kind of style. times like this, i want to go through her entire archive of collections dating all the way back to 1980 and start fashioning my entire wardrobe after her clean and simple aesthetic. it’s because of her that i’ve always wished i could pull of a beret. and how does she make a simple fedora so decidedly cool? i always feel kinda like a tool when i wear one, but now i wanna try it again. with a necktie and a cool jacket and some leather sandals. yes, please!

cardigan sample sale!

it just so happens to be perfect sweater weather today in la, which is perfectly fitting because cardigan is currently having an online sample sale! i love it when brands do this because i always feel like i’m missing out when i hear about some awesome sample sale in new york. if you head on over to the site now through may 26, you’ll get 40% off everything in the shop using code SALEAWAY. now i just need to control myself because i want all of the sweaters! (and dresses and tops and pants.)

want: the denim tee

it’s one of those items that feels like it should already be in my closet. one of those basics that you never pick up because it’s always around– until you’re actually looking for it. they pop-up in stores now and then. i remember last spring, i saw a simple denim shift dress at madewell, but it sold out before i was able to snag one. i saw one not too long ago in a boutique, but the price point was a little too high for me. i’ve had the above image in my inspiration folder for the last two years. it’s the perfect, lightweight chambray tee that would be so good for these frequent los angeles heat waves. and i also wouldn’t mind one in a slightly more substantial denim like the photo below. they’re simple enough that i should probably just try to find an easy pattern and sew one up some afternoon. but maybe there’s something good floating out around there that i just haven’t found yet.

any leads i should know about?

mayflower supply spring 2014

SP14_look11

the new mayflower supply co. spring 2014 lookbook and collection has just launched, and kinda just want to jump right in and live in it. the vintage pieces are all right up my alley these days with lots of natural fibers like denim, linen, and cotton in simple, minimalist designs and monochrome palettes. this season, shop owner liz hull has also introduced her first non-vintage items by winden jewelry and kertis leather goods set against a backdrop of the lush botanical garden at smith college.
