outfit: super casual

our second day in kauai was spent driving around the island and getting the lay of the land. we meandered along highway 56 from poipu all the way up to hanalei with a stop at mermaids cafe for ahi wraps along the way. unfortunately, we didn’t get to do much outside of the car because most of the day it was pouring rain. but we did get a taste of what the island has to offer peering out our car windos. i kept it super casual in this lauren moffatt jumpsuit. it’s actually the first time i have ever worn a jumpsuit in my adult life, and even though it’s not what you might typically expect to see me wearing, it just felt so perfect in the warm hawaii weather.

outfit: maha’ulepu

if you follow me on instagram, you may have noticed a slight change of scenery in my last few photos. that’s because this week i’m spending spring break on the island of kauai with brendan and his family. it’s become a bit of an annual tradition for us to board a plane and spend a week exploring another island in hawaii.  knowing that there’s a trip around the corner gives me something to look forward to when life is getting crazy, and thinking about this vacation has certainly helped me to get through some of the harder months this year! i also had a lot of fun preoccupying myself with picking out clothes to wear for the warm weather. you can somehow get away with wearing so many silly clothes in bright garish colors when you’re staying in a place like hawaii, so i decided to keep things super casual and slightly kitchshy. my first look is the simplest and most casual, i wore this for an easy 4-mile “hike” along maha’ulepu trail near keoneloa beach. it’s the first place we’ve explored near our hotel, and if this is any indication of what the week is going to be like, then we’re in for quite a treat!

outfit: working girl

not that kind of working girl. but doesn’t this outfit look so very office appropriate? maybe a bit like a college professor, or someone getting ready to research an archeological dig… it’s always fun when i pull together an outfit without really drawing from any sort of reference, yet in the end, the clothes sort of dictate what character you’ll be playing for the day. what i like about all of the pieces i’m wearing today is that they’re all versatile enough to go in just about any direction. but for now, i’m headed out to the office!

calivintage_0231

my look today is ever-so-slightly inspired by marianne faithfull. scrolling through the photos on pinterest, those vintage images of her in the sixties always catch my eye and capture my imagination. it’s an easy look, something i wore working as a stylist for a photo shoot a few weeks back, but the subtle details still make me feel quite glamorous. there’s just something about the luxury of a (faux) fur coat and a totally superflous pair of square-shaped shades. all the while balanced by the ease of a shift dress and opaque tights that lends an almost carefree ease to the way i walk and move.

outfit: the uniform

perhaps it was all of those years i was forced into wearing a uniform in school that has led me to this place. whatever the reason, i can’t seem to resist wearing this outfit (in its many different iterations) lately. i’ve been collecting all sorts of pretty blouses, some in solid colors, some prints, some fancy textured metallics even. i button them up and pull on a pinafore and i’m ready to go for the day. if i had to wear a uniform in 2013, this would be it.

if only i could go back in time to tell that to my junior high self, hiding behind the bleachers at school with my skirt hiked up to here, dreaming of the day that i could wear whatever i wanted.

outfit: styld.by calivintage for gap x tumblr x filter magazine

today i thought i’d share a little project i’m working on in collaboration with gap x tumblr x filter magazine! if you you’ve been following me on tumblr, then you may have seen my announcement that this thursday, i’ll be hosting an event at the gap san francisco flagship store to kick-off sxsw with a performance by local band geographer. if you’re interested in attending, you can rsvp to the free show right here.

and in honor of the occasion, gap asked me to style a few festival-ready looks for guys and girls. so i enlisted the help of my partner-in-crime and photographer, brendan as we went on an adventure in mt. diablo and snapped a few festival styles.

outfit: speckled

a few weeks back, i wandered into local sf shop, gravel & gold. they have a cool selection of cards, prints, and gift items, and an entire rack of super soft stripey shirts that i could honestly live in. but what i didn’t know is that they’ve also been creating one-of-a-kind pieces using vintage fabrics. this little prairie dress jumped right out at me with it’s cheerful floral print, and it’s been in high rotation in my closet ever since! it kind of reminds me of little sprinkles, so as i layered up my outfit to keep warm on a chilly spring day, i kept with the theme and added more of the same texture to my outfit.

oufit: spots and specs

this weekend was super busy, the type that leaves you feeling a little cheated out of your leisure time come monday morning when you can hardly lift your head off your pillow! but despite the fact that i spent most of my weekend working, i really can’t complain. we were lucky enough to have beautiful spring weather all weekend long, and there’s always time to go out on a stroll through my neighborhood between errands to enjoy all of the fresh tree blossoms illuminated against the blue sky.

i kinda like the way my fall outfit sorta stands out against the spring foliage. it’s still only february, and the weather is not always as warm as it seems. i can’t quite leave the house without a few layers, so i’m still going to be enjoying all my fall clothes for at least a few more weeks.

outfit: homebody

just a simple outfit for a weekend day. i’ve been doing a lot of hibernating over the last couple of weeks, and a lot of my daily outfits have been super comfy to reflect that. i wore this for a very easy going sunday, eating decadent cream filled doughnuts from doughnut dolly, getting a flu shot, and doing some “spring” cleaning. i’ve been cleaning, rearranging, and decorating the apartment in an attempt to change things up a bit. the space is starting to feel fresh and new, which is especially nice for building a nest on the couch and reading books. it’s been really nice to use this month as a time to recharge in advance of what i expect to be a very busy year!
