outfit: flowers and braids

these photos were snapped back at the beginning of december during a stroll through the mountain view cemetery near my house. some weekends are just made for long walks, and it really is the perfect place to visit after meandering through the neighborhood and stopping for a warm cup of coffee. i call this my “mcdonalds sweater” because it’s yellow and red and it makes me think of ketchup and mustard. i love it because it really does look vintage, but it’s a new piece from the lauren moffatt fall 2012 collection. she really does make the dreamiest pieces.

wearing: lauren moffatt sweater and skirt, seychelles sycamore flats, j.crew bag, and ysl rouge pur couture in le rouge

outfit: on solid ground

well, it’s a new year and i’m back at home after the holidays slowly transitioning back to my usual routine. whenever i visit my hometown of redlands, i always imagine that i’ll have all this time to snap outfit photos in from of all my favorite spots, but relaxing in the warmth of my grandmother’s home with my brother and sister, aunts and uncles, and cousins, usually lures me away from my usual antics. but i did snap these photos on the last day of the year in front of the historic a.k. smiley public library. i have many memories in this place, hudled on the marble floors flipping through books.

i’m also wearing what i can easily say is my current favorite outfit. if i could get away with it, i’d wear this every day. the little tunic is handmade out of a velvety soft fine wale corduroy, and it matches so perfectly with the embroidered details of this vintage blouse. and the piÁ¨ce de rÁ©sistance is my new carven coat which i scored on super sale as a little christmas gift to myself. it has quickly put all of my other coats to shame.

wearing: elizabeth tunic courtesy of wayward daughter, vintage blouse, carven double-breasted tweed coat, tabio 110 denier tights in navy, vintage salvatore ferragamo vara pumps in navy, orla kiely gold sparkle leather holly bag,  ysl rouge pur couture glossy stain in rouge laque

a year of outfits

calivintage_0108

this december marks the four-year anniversary of calivintage, and i sort of can’t believe the whirlwind it’s been since i first started sheepishly snapping outfit pictures on my rooftop in 2008. rather than post a million and one outfits from the beginning of time, i thought i’d stick with the usual year-end round up of some of my personal favorite outfits over the past year. it’s always fun looking back and seeing the ways we’ve grown and changed (or stayed the same), and each outfit holds it’s own set of memories.

a few observations:
1. this year, i decided to be comfortable and just wear my favorite flats instead of destroying my feet with sky-high heels. the only problem is that i think i got a little too comfortable slipping on my ferragamos every day. good thing for me, i did some christmas shopping the past couple of weeks and invested in quite a few pairs of fancy new shoes. perhaps 2013 will be my year of shoes?
2. my hair grew so long! i always think of myself as the girl with a blunt bob, but 2012 was the year i decided to grow out my tresses. the past couple of months it got long enough to try a few updos, but we’ll see how long i can resist the stylist’s chair…
3. i feel like i really came into my own this year in terms of my style. my whole life, i’ve done a lot of experimenting. i appreciate a broad range of styles, and i’ve certainly gone through a lot of phases. most of them have been fleeting, but as i find myself approaching the age of 30 in less than a month, i think i’ve started to settle-in to a signature look, and i’ve really started to focus on cultivating my ideal wardrobe with those “investment pieces” they speak of in magazines. i know my style will never stop evolving, but i can say that i feel more comfortable in my clothes, and my skin, than ever before.

who knows what 2013 will hold, but thank you so much to each and every one of you for following me along on my journey, stopping by to say hello, and being the wonderful people that really truly make this blog possible. here’s to another wonderful year ahead!

outfit: california christmas

i’ve been happily on vacation visiting with my family in redlands since thursday, and i’ve certainly been taking advantage of the mild winter weather! i’ve gotten away with bare legs and light coats just about every day, and i’ve been soaking up the clear skies and valley views of the san bernardino mountains around us, and spending every minute with my family. it was my brother’s birthday on friday, and i feel like we’ve been celebrating non-stop since then. last night i decorated christmas cookies with my cousins, and today we’re getting ready to feast on chicken with mole before turning around and stuffing ourselves with tamales on christmas day.

these pictures were snapped at the historic train station in downtown redlands, before we headed over to my grandma’s house to enjoy the holiday.

outfit: a holiday treat!

tis the season! though you wouldn’t know it if you were living in california! we’ve had some chilly days here and there, but just this weekend i was able to pull on one of my favorite new vintage skirts with bare legs, at least during the warm hours of the day. later on, i admit that i pulled on a pair of tights and a coat to go out, but that’s pretty much how we do it year-round here. always good to have your layers and be prepared for anything!

i’m also wearing my new top from family affairs for a very special holiday treat…

today only, family affairs is offering the pony up shirt for 30% off from $130 to $89!

wearing: family affairs pony up shirt, j.crew silk crepe blouse, vintage leather skirt, vintage t-straps from pretty penny vintage in oakland, ca, vintage jute tote

i’ve been using polyvore a lot lately, pulling together dream outfits that i hope to someday wear, and creating variations on outfits i’ve already worn. i’ve been neatly organizing my favorite collages into collections, and cataloging all of my favorite pieces. it’s one of those activities that feeds the part of my brain that likes to make lists and put everything into order. here are a few examples, but you can see the rest of my collages here.

outfit: fancy floral

on saturday, i got all dolled-up for no reason in particular. we were in the middle of a four-day rainstorm and i was lounging around in my pajamas, drinking coffee and slowly mustering up the energy to get dressed for the rainy day outside. i went into the bathroom and spotted a new set of fancy false lashes (mac #6) and decided to give them a try. i’ve only ever worn individual lashes from the drug store, so seeing these big doll eyes stare back at me was inspiration enough to try out a new do, so i went for it with a silly beehive bouffant.

and in the spirit of trying new things, i pulled out this bright pea coat that i procured on etsy several weeks back in an effort to incorporate more print and color into my life. and it certainly came in handy on such a gloomy day. in fact, i’d like to think that these bright flowers inspired the clouds to part with just enough time for a quick stroll through the mountain view cemetery.

wearing: thrifted vintage silk blouse, vintage floral pea coat, family affairs frankie leather skirt, target tights, vintage mary janes from pretty penny in oakland, ca, orla kiely gold leather holly bag.
