outfit: summer’s end

calivintage: muted hues

ahh, it feels good to be almost back to my normal routine. this weekend, i stayed close to home for some much-needed house cleaning and spent a good several hours clearing out the closet and sweeping up the dust that had been collecting in all the little corners of my apartment. and on sunday, i even made the trip over to berkeley bowl, a very fancy natural foods store nearby, to stock-up the cupboards. i usually avoid going there because it’s always so crowded and you have to defensively navigate the aisles avoiding shopping cart collisions, or waiting impatiently for traffic jams to clear. but the summer is coming to an end, and i’m finding myself on a bit of a health kick after feasting for months on too much bbq and boozy drinks.

i also decided to clear out my color palette a bit for my last guest post over at the dahlia uk blog. this is my third look for them, styled around this darling green pinafore. i usually wear a lot of navy blue, so i decided to challenge myself a little and  try something new. to me, these muted tones represent these early fall months that feel a bit more like summer here in the bay area, but still hint at the shorter days and soft light that fills the sky in the evenings.

it’s free to attend, so click here to register, and i’ll see you there!

outfit: an interlude

i returned from my ten day trip to new york on thursday night, got in a good night’s sleep, and woke up bright and early the next day to head out for yet another weekend away. this time, i headed up north along the california coast to the sleepy town of gualala, ca to celebrate seven years with my partner brendan. it was quite the whirlwind to transition from the hustle and bustle of new york city to a spacious cabin overlooking the ocean, but it was definitely a welcome retreat. we rented a little spot at st. orres (where we actually stayed for my birthday back in january), and spent most of our time relaxing in the hot tub and taking-in the majestic views. the retro cabin looked practically untouched since it was built in the 1970s and it seemed to match too perfectly with my outfit, so we decided to do a quick photo shoot to remember this silly little spot!

i’m now back at home, feeling relaxed, and getting ready to head out to work. my vacation is over, but i still have tons of fashion week photos to show you, so i’ll consider this just a brief interlude between all of the noise of fashion week.

calivintage: nyfw day 5

fast-forwarding a bit to day five of new york fashion week. on this particular day, i couldn’t decide whether i more closely resembled a giant slice of american cheese, or a creamsicle. many people referred to the latter, so i’ll gladly take it. i had actually been eying this dress on etsy for weeks, but kept holding back because i wasn’t quite sure if i could pull off such a bright orange hue. i found myself so oddly drawn to it that i finally decided to take the plunge and just get it. it’s definitely an eye catching color, but i really like the fun, free-spirited vibe of it. and sometimes it’s nice to dress a bit like a silly cartoon character from the 1960s.

onto day two here in new york… this photo was snapped in williamsburg after another fun day. still trying to manage our jetlag, we woke up late before heading over to the etsy offices to visit with the lovely team of ladies behind the etsy editorial team. it’s so rare that i meet other people who have the same job as me in a professional setting, so it was lots of fun to talk shop and hear about how they run things there. not to mention getting to check out their beautiful work space. it’s pretty much just as lovely as you might imagine the etsy offices to be… filled with unique decorations, mismatched vintage desks, and beautiful art.

from there, we hopped on a ferry to take in the sights, and i split up with my team for a quick visit with nina of family affairs and rebecca of the clothes horse. all in all, it was a much more relaxed day than my first, but i still decided to lay low and skip out on the fno festivities to catch up on work.

after spending an entire day in the airport on tuesday, i finally managed to catch a red eye flight into the city and arrived early wednesday morning. i got to the apartment where i’m staying, grabbed breakfast, and headed out for a very busy day. first stop, the lauren moffatt spring 2013 presentation where i wore this lovely new dress from her latest collection to take photos and film a fun video (which i will share tomorrow)! from there, i ran off to see whit, then met up with my modcloth coworkers to finish up yet another video shoot before heading out for the samantha pleet presentation. it was a very fun albeit very exhausting day. not sure exactly how i managed to make it through the day with only a couple of hours of sleep, but the fun and excitement of new york city, the shows, and the people seem to keep me going.

all last week was busy and exhausting. there are two ways that you can respond to such a situation: 1) you can go home, feel sorry for yourself, and eat a tub of ice cream in front of the tube, or 2) fuck it! throw all common sense out the window, forget your routine, and just do something different. i opted for the latter. on one such weeknight, i threw on my fancy new party dress, and went out on the town. since the sun was just setting, i took the opportunity to show off said fancy dress with a little photo shoot on the secret stairway near my house, then headed off on my evening adventure. the week was long and busy, but sometimes you just gotta live it up and let off some steam.

these photos were taken for part two of my guest post series over at dahlia uk. you can see my first post here.

i was feeling nostalgic the other day and happened upon these photos of me as a kid. i actually shared some of these a looong while back, but pictures are meant to be rediscovered again and again throughout a lifetime, and sometimes it’s good to dwell on those memories for just a few moments. i love the fact that i went through such a long phase in which i refused to smile for photos. there are actually professional studio photos of me grimacing and pouting in a pink frilly dress. despite the photographer’s attempts, i refused to give in and crack a smile, so my mom had them printed. good thing she had a sense of humor.

also note that my hair is an absolute mess in those first two photos. that fancy haircut was the result of an incident in which i got a huge wad of gum stuck in my hair and attempted to get it out myself. niiiice.

outfit: outside lands

calivintage: festival fashion

despite the record-breaking warm temperatures in most of the bay area, if you found yourself heading a few miles west to golden gate park for the outside lands festival over the weekend, then you found yourself wrapped in a blanket of fog. or if you were me, wrapped in a blanket dress. leaving oakland each morning sweating in the bright shining sun, it was hard for me to contemplate the fact that my destination would be so chilly. i spent three days at the festival shooting street style for free people, so it was important for me to dress comfortably while still maintaining enough movement to chase after cute festival-goers with my camera in hand. i recently picked up this little quilted number with the intention of saving it for the warm fall months, but the fickle san francisco weather offered me an opportunity to wear it right away. it might be a little dress, but the thick quilted layers kept me warm enough for forgo a heavy jacket for most of the day, kinda like the vintage version of those little down vests that people wear while camping. and the fun pattern coupled with the ascot tie and ankle boots made me feel a bit like robin hood. all i needed was a little feathered cap, ha! certainly appropriate for traipsing around in the lush forested golden gate park!

more than a feeling swarovski giveaway

calivintage + polyvore + swarovski

today i am decked out in my most romantic getup in honor of my latest partnership with polyvore + swarovski as a host of the more than a feeling contest. and the feeling of the day is love. when i think of love, i immediately picture all of those silly romantic and indulgently excessive things in life, like flowers and chocolates and lace and cake! so what could be more fitting than pulling on a lacy dress to prance around in the rose garden? whenever i stroll through this particular park near my house, there always seems to be some fun photo shoot going on for engagements, weddings, sweet sixteens, or just because. little girls with flowers in their hair, or couples giggling as the photographer directs them to gaze into each other’s eyes. it may be a silly sight, but we all have to indulge in our romantic side every once in a while.

if you’re feeling romantic, then swarovski wants to know: what do you wear to express your love? create a polyvore collage inspired by this sappy sentiment (see my example below) to be entered for a chance to win the swarovski emoti love. i’ll be looking through all of the entries and judging the winner, so i can’t wait to see what you all come up with.  click here to enter!
