astral weeks

calivintage: astral weeks

on sunday, me and the boy went for a drive up north to occidental and bodega bay. we know of a super secret and totally awesome scenic road that leads out to the ocean from occidental, and we’ve been going for little day trips up there for years. the views are epic, but on this particular day, it was insanely foggy, lending a completely different feel to one of our usual haunts. while we were playing on the rocks and snapping pictures, brendan insisted that it looked like a photo shoot for a van morrison album, hence the title of this post.

after having our fun driving along the winding roads and checking out the scenery, we stopped in at a delicious german restaurant and stuffed ourselves with decadent meat dishes and dark beers, before heading home and ending our evening at the movies. we went to see black swan. i won’t spoil it for you, but i will say that it is amazingly good, despite the fact that i have been cringing a little at the memory of certain scenes…

these colors

calivintage: orange and black
today i had a bit of fun mixing colors. i bought this vintage 1940’s black and orange dress last year, but i’ve only worn it a couple of times.  i think the challenge is that it’s, well, black and orange.  definitely appropriate for halloween.  also appropriate for celebrating the giants winning the world series.  but the rest of the year, i find it challenging to work with this particular color.  i’ve been living in these super warm olive green tights, so i sorta just threw them on as an afterthought, but you know what?  green is a really nice compliment to orange, especially this muted shade. so here’s to continuing experiments with color!
hm.  and now that i think of it, this orange color has got me craving some pumpkin pie!  i haven’t had a slice yet this year, and i’ve got quite the hankering. and i have two little pumpkins sitting in my kitchen just waiting for the transformation.  never made a pumpkin pie from scratch before, but i think i’m gonna try.  ah yes, don’t we all love a good excuse to sit around eating food all day?

a neighborhood stroll

calivintage: mellow yellow
it feels like it’s been such an awfully long time since i’ve done a post out in the world rather than on my little rooftop!  so today i decided to take you on a little walk around my neighborhood in oakland and show you a few sights.  on this particular day, we woke up late and lazy, and strolled over to one of our favorite breakfast spots, lynn and lu’s escapade cafe.  it’s a little hole-in-the-wall with really good prices for the bay area (think: $7.95 for eggs benedict!), and they have the nicest staff in the world.  they come by every 10 seconds to fill up your mug of coffee and your food usually arrives in what feels like 2 minutes!  also: on our walk to get brunch, we passed by this silly mural, but when i went over to get my picture in front of it, i spotted a black cat in the window with dreamy green eyes.  as you can see, i was just a little excited…
as far as my clothes, i’m wearing two brand new pieces that came in the mail last week, and i can officially say that i’m addicted to shopping at asos online.  this mustard yellow trench coat could pass off as vintage, and the knit sweater dress is now the most comfortable dress in my closet. i want to wear them both every single day, which is a sign of a good purchase.

decadence

calivintage: decadence
today i got dressed up all fancy-like in my fur stole, benetton sweater, and pretty new black lace dress. for the past several months, i feel as though i’ve gotten away from more feminine looks such as this one, but recently i’ve been getting more excited about layering sweaters and cardigans with pretty vintage (or vintage-inspired) dresses, warm tights, and tall heels.  something about this particular look made me feel especially rich and decadent and it offered me an air of sophistication for the day (at least in my head!).
now that i’m on the hunt for more vintage dresses, i decided to check out the local vintage boutiques over the weekend with the hopes of scoring some new loot!  but alas, i went home empty handed without even a simple cardigan to show for it.  i feel like i sometimes talk about scoring vintage like it’s no big thing.  but it’s amazing how much of a challenge it really can be to find good vintage dresses that are not only pretty, but that actually fit.  good thing i’ll always have next weekend!

rise and shine

calivintage: autumn shades
one benefit of our recent time change is that the sun comes up nice and early to wake me up and get me ready for the day.  i don’t like the fact that it gets dark at 5pm, but the sunny mornings are something i really don’t mind since i’m now waking up around 7am most days.  on this particular morning, i was able to snag my boyfriend on a day off from work, so we decided to snap some photos in the sunrise.  we had so much fun playing with the sunlight, that we got a little carried away and took more photos than usual! which is actually a really nice way to start off the morning, especially when followed by a drive in the car blasting joni mitchell and singing along at the top of my lungs.

but onto my outfit: i just recently ordered this beautiful chiffon swiss dot dress from modcloth, and i think i’m in love.  the moment i pulled it out of the package, i knew is was going to be perfect.  it fits like a glove and i love the way the full skirt swishes around me when i move.  it really looks and feels just like a vintage dress, and most importantly, i just like the way it makes me feel.  don’t you love it when that happens?

light and dark

calvintage: light and dark

over the past couple of months, my life has changed quite a bit.  i’m very happy and excited for all of the changes, but one thing that i’ve been sorely missing are my weekly trips to the thrift shops.  this weekend, i went to the bike expo in san francisco, and i just so happened to see a thrift store on our way home and swiftly changed course to stop in.  i was with friends, so i couldn’t stay as long as i wanted, rummaging through every single rack and shelf in the shop, but while i was there, i did manage a pretty good mini score of stuff: a beautiful brown benetton sweater, a silly vintage sweater shell with a little fur decoration, a pair of bass tassel loafers, and this beautiful silk skirt!
i wanted to wear the skirt right away, and it was the perfect opportunity to style up an outfit with this incredible sage green family affairs silk moonlight shirt that i received from the designer, nina, during a visit to her studio in new york over the summer.  i love the juxtaposition between the pale pastel and the more autumnal shades of brown and green.  and when i went up on the roof, the light blouse picked up the last of the setting sunlight as we transitioned from light to dark.

halloween weekend

oh hello friends! it feels like it’s been such a long while since i’ve posted on here, even though it’s only been a week! things have been very hectic over here behind-the-scenes at calivintage, so i’ve been doing a little bit of hibernating when it comes to posting on the blog. i’m still getting dressed every day, but its been a challenge finding the time to get actual photos! but rest-assured, as i adjust to my busy schedule, i think i’ll start to post more regularly once again.
in the meantime, i thought i’d share my halloween “costume.” i actually had big plans to dress as peewee herman this year, but as it often does, halloween sorta crept up on me before i was able to hit the thrift shops in search of a grey suit and red bowtie, so i resorted to my closet for last minute preparations. i just so happened to have recently bought this very precious velvet dress with a ruffled lace collar and instantly knew that it would be perfect for a fancy french mime look. throw on the lightest shade of foundation at the drug store with some exaggerated eyeliner and very pink cheeks and you’ve got your costume. it’s what i wore for the halloween weekend (yep! friday, saturday, and sunday). these are a few shots i got at a halloween party hosted by nicole and ashley. i had a lot of fun posing for silly photos in nicole’s giant closet full of vintage treasures!

rainy weekend

calivintage: rainy weekend
and just like that, the rain came. this weekend, i woke up on both saturday and sunday morning to the sound of rain drops outside my window. i’ve never been a huge fan of the rain, but it was actually welcome weather, perfectly appropriate for my lazy weekend spent curled up on the couch watching bad tv. that’s right, for the first time in my adult life, i have cable television. we set it up on friday and it’s been nice to sit there watching silly movies on demand. and it’s especially nice for chilling out and regrouping after a whirlwind trip to boston last week! i don’t think i mentioned it here, but i was gone for a couple of days visiting one of the kork-ease offices for their spring 2011 lookbook photoshoot! the only catch is that i can’t share any photos of the new shoes just yet.
and can you believe that i didn’t get any pictures of boston while i was there? it was just too quick of a trip! but it was a beautiful place for certain. i’d never been there before and i was definitely blown away by all of the bright orange and fire red leaves in the trees. we just don’t have that type of thing here in california! i can definitely see the appeal in actual seasons.

polka dot

DSC_0055
i feel as though i have broken some sort of personal record for the number of times i’ve worn this polka dot dress this year. who knew that something as distinct as polka dots could turn into such an essential neutral in my wardrobe? it may have to do with the color because i feel like it goes with almost everything. but it may also have to do with the cut and size of it. somehow, it just feels so right when i throw it on.
i have definitely become a creature of habit when it comes to getting dressed lately. i find a certain formula, and i stick to it. whether that be particular colors, particular combinations, or just a handful of base items that i wear over and over again. i like it because i feel like i’m getting a lot of use out of many of my clothes, but i suppose i’d be lying if i said i wasn’t itching to do some fall shopping. there’s so much i want that i’m actually overwhelmed and haven’t made any decisions just yet. but i have a feeling it’s on the way. oh my poor wallet!

over the weekend

i almost didn’t write a post today because, well, i’m out of commission. i’m not sick, but i somehow managed to injure my back over the weekend and i’ve basically been limited to laying on the couch, laying in bed, or pathetically propping myself up at the computer because i can’t seem to tear myself away from it! but avalonne (the girl from hk, ldn, and sf) saved the day with these lovely photos she posted from our brief meeting at the alameda flea market yesterday. it was quite nice to bump into her in her perfectly 70’s get up. and i really enjoyed reading her account of the day, and only wished that i had been able to stay longer!
unfortunately for me, moments after our lovely little shoot, i got a terrible pain in my back and felt as though i was acting out some ridiculous scene from a sitcom where someone throws out their back and everyone laughs as they hunch over, unable to stand back up! i’ve never injured my back before, and i would certainly love it if you could share any stories, tips, or hints with me since i could definitely use some advice. regardless, i’m sure i’ll be fine in a couple of days and back to my flea market adventures as per usual!
oh, and i almost forgot to mention my flea market outfit. i am currently obsessed with this cool sailor jacket i bought for sale on gilt groupe. even though i often think of sailor styles as being very summery, i think this is going to be a nice one to layer up with my fall wardrobe, don’t you think?
