oshkosh b’gosh!

calivintage: oshkosh b'gosh!

yep! today i am wearing my new pair of overalls. i like to think of these as the grownup version of those classic oshkosh engineer striped overalls we all seem to have had at some point in our lives. and they were perfect weekend wear for a lazy sunday spent sleeping in, indulging in lots of delicious food, and stopping in at a couple of thrift stores.  i pretty much had to have a chill weekend after having a bit of a rough time adjusting back to regular life post-summer vacation. it’s certainly not like those oshkosh days when summer was three months long! but at least i can kinda sorta pretend with a little bit of silly nostalgia.

today i was delighted to discover that calivintage was chosen as blog of the week on the bust blog! bust magazine has been one of my favorite magazines for years, so this is quite an honor. just to know that the awesome people behind the publication even know about my blog makes me all giddy inside. thank you so much bust!

guest post: what i wore

calivintageillos

remember a while back when i kicked-off a series of guest posts? well, i know it’s been a while since the last one (see: rebecca), but i still have a ton of really awesome guest bloggers lined up. and today i am excited to welcome jessica of what i wore! she has been a great inspiration to me over the years, and i am honored to have her here today! if you aren’t already familiar with her, then you might not know that she recently released a book titled what i wore: four seasons, one closet, endless recipes for style. so in celebration of her new book, i thought it would be fun if she cooked up a little outfit recipe for me!

“I’m so excited to guest post for Erin today on Cali Vintage. Erin and I first met two years ago at the Weardrobe Conference in NYC and have been good friends ever since. I love Erin’s sense of style, so I opted to illustrate some pieces I can absolutely see in her closet.

1. Tortoise Spectacles – I love how Erin is always a step ahead of the curve in her choice in eyewear. These frames have such a vintage sensibility to them and I actually think you may have already seen similar glasses in Erin’s outfit posts!

2. Short Red Dress – The dressed screamed ERIN to me for a handful of reasons 1) she loves little details (the white piping on the collar and sleeves is adorable) 2) anything remotely nautical makes me think of Cali Vintage 3) The girl’s got gams!

3. Geo Necklace – I’m not sure what about this necklace caught my eye, but it’s definitely very now, which is why I think Erin would dig it!

4. Retro Two Piece Swim Suit – One of my favorite aspects of Erin’s style is that she can look very vintage, yet oh-so-now at the same time. The high rise bottoms in this set have that pin up quality (which looks great on Erin), but the top is a little more modern.

5. Chunky Bootie – Erin wears the highest heels and is always onto the next thing in footwear. After experiencing some of San Francisco’s hills last week, I have a feeling this rough traction would come in handy for her as well!

6. Red Lipstick – I wish more women would rock red lipstick as fearlessly as Erin!”

pin-up

calivintage: pin-up

it’s the middle of the summer, and i have to admit that when it comes to my clothes, i’ve been feeling a little ho-hum. i’ve been throwing on a lot of easy basics, and calling it a day. but even in the dog days of summer, sometimes it’s nice to change things up and play a little dress up. so when rockabilly clothing store stop staring! recently asked if i’d like to pick out a dress, i knew it would be the perfect opportunity to have some fun and try something new! the look may be retro, but somehow, in all my years of loving vintage, i’ve really never actually owned a proper pin-up dress!

and as you might guess, this darling little sailor-inspired number had my name written all over it. it’s definitely demure with a modest neckline and a longer hem, but the figure hugging silhouette is quite a bit racier than my usual duds. so of course, when i slipped into this bad boy, i had to indulge in some silly pin-up poses and play homage to my favorite racy vintage photographs and illustrations. i seriously think that wearing a dress like this makes you stand up just a little bit taller, and certainly commands a lot of attention. i even got a few compliments from passers-by on the street! so i’ve come to a conclusion: i think that every girl should have a fun pin-up dress in their wardrobe, even if it’s only for dress up! don’t you agree?

the big island

calivintage: keokea

today is my last day in hawaii! my week long adventure has finally come to an end and i’m headed to the airport in a few short hours thankful to have had to opportunity to come here, and happy to have a few photos to remember it by. these were taken near keokea beach park on the northernmost tip of the big island of hawaii. the scenery on this part of the island is breathtaking to say the least, and i really wish i had more time to explore the area! but it was fun to hop around the beach in another one of the vintage dresses i picked up at discovery antiques earlier this week! the sixties style and bright colors really popped against the green and blue scenery.

i’m also very honored to have picked up this beautiful hand woven clutch from the kimura lauhala shop. i discovered the shop while exploring the artist community in holualoa and was blown away by the beautiful selection of hand woven bags and hats. the woman behind the counter told me that the shop had been built by her grandfather in 1914 after he walked across the island from hilo with her grandmother. they set up shop and her grandmother began designing beautiful hand woven bags and hawaiian fabrics. lining the shelves behind the counter were vintage purses woven by her grandmother that i wish she would have let me buy! but she said she was keeping them in hopes that her daughters would learn to make them! it’s that wonderful, rich history that draws me to vintage, and i was so thankful to have had the opportunity to listen to her story!

hawaii photo diary, part two

hawaii photo diary, part two

and just as quickly as we got here, the trip is already winding down… i leave hawaii tomorrow, but i’m glad to be bringing back so many memories with me when i return. these photos were snapped yesterday on a little tour of the puÊ»uhonua o hōnaunau national historical park. it was a touristy little spot, perfect for taking cheesy vacation photos!

earlier in the day, upon the recommendation of a tumblr friend (thanks for all the suggestions, you guys!), we made our way up to a little artists community in holualoa, where we checked out local art galleries. we  were so curious to check out the holuakoa cafe there, that we returned in the evening for some delicious local cuisine. all in all, a very enjoyable day!

vintage hawaii

calivintage: vintage hawaii

it’s been a couple of days since i’ve shared an outfit, mostly because i haven’t been wearing anything remarkable, but also because i’ve been doing my best to stay offline to enjoy my trip since it’s already halfway through! but yesterday was an especially exciting day, so of course, i have to share! we started off the day in kealakekua to check out a number of antique and thrift shops that we had seen along the road. our first stop was in a silly old shop called discovery antiques and ice cream, which was filled to the brim with vintage hawaiian souvenirs, ephemera, jewelry, etc. and to my delight, there was an entire rack of vintage hawaiian print dresses! i scored three pretty pieces, but this one stole the show! it was about $20 and exactly my size! honestly, i didn’t even expect to find an antique shop while i was here, so it was a pretty nice surprise!

as lunch time rolled around, we stopped at annie’s island fresh burgers after having gotten a recommendation from a tumblr friend. and let me just tell you, they were the best burgers and tempura onion rings i have had in recent memory. topped off with a lager from a local brewery, and i was pretty much in heaven! but the day wasn’t over yet! we also discovered a warehouse-sized used book store where brendan picked up a number of books from local authors, and then we headed out to kukio beach to lay in the sun before heading back to the resort to chill out and have silly mixed drinks. it was a day that i will not soon forget.

hawaii photo diary, day two

as with any vacation, it’s hard to resist taking a million and one photos of everything you see. especially in a strange new land like hawaii! i’ve been lugging around my digital slr, a little 35 mm point and shoot camera, and my iphone everywhere i go just snapping away to keep a document of what i’ve seen (and for a bit of photography practice)! it makes me think of that kinks song, “people take pictures of the summer, just in case someone thought they had missed it, and it prove that it really existed…” haha!

these photos were snapped at kukio beach on our second day here!
