sail away

calivintage: sail away

this weekend, i couldn’t wait to wear my brand new nadinoo dress! the moment i laid eyes on it, i knew it would have to be mine. i see a sailor collar, i have to have it! so this is what i wore sunday for a fun day at the alameda flea market. it’s usually on the first sunday of every month, but because of the rain last weekend, they pushed the date back. and it couldn’t have been a better day for a flea market, with sunny skies and a gentle breeze. i scored some pretty awesome loot including a beautiful blue and purple floral cocktail dress from the 1950s (for only $15?!) and a couple of darling 1960s hats among other things. i also decided to take street style photos of some of the fashionable ladies i saw browsing through the rows of antiques, and got a few really cute shots that i can’t wait to share with you! and in the process, i met a few people who actually read my blog and had some really nice conversations! it really made my day!

then after the flea market me and the boy went back to our neighborhood in oakland and snapped a few pictures by lake merritt. i’ve mentioned it before, but we live about 3 blocks from this lake! i just rarely have photos of it because there are always so many people hanging around and as i was mentioning last week, i just get so shy about taking photos in public. but after having been approaching strangers for street style photos all day, i was feeling pretty gutsy!

put a bird on it

calivintage: put a bird on it

pretty much any time i see a bird on anything, i now have to reference that sketch. such was the case with my new bird print dress that i wore for a date night with the boy. and you’ll have to excuse the high volume of photos. i guess we got carried away prancing around the neighborhood in the setting sun. we were goofing off taking photos and looked over to notice some dude just watching us from his window. it was a little awkward, but i just laughed it off. i’ve been trying to be more and more brave about going out and taking pictures in public, but you would be amazed at how many people either stop to watch, or shout things from their car windows as they pass by. nothing bad, but it certainly makes me feel a little silly.

anyway, i really liked this look because it’s a little fancier than my usual attire. and it was the perfect opportunity for me to try wearing my new earrings from jene de spain. believe it or not, i have actually never worn dangly earrings before in my life. with short hair, i just never really thought they were a possibility! but these art deco-inspired earrings have proven me wrong! i actually think they are a perfect compliment to a short bob. i have been converted!

new bike

calivintage: new bike

guess what, you guys?! i got a new bike! i went to pick up this lovely 8 speed mixte from public bikes on friday afternoon and was so excited i could hardly contain myself. i was all amped up and ready to go for a spin, but unfortunately, the weather disagreed with a forecast of about 2 inches of rain for the weekend. i stayed indoors for most of the weekend, but low and behold, on sunday afternoon, the grey skies held the water in just long enough for me to go on a little test ride.

yep, she’s my new baby. rides like a breeze with a snazzy 8 speed internal hub so i can tackle my hilly neighborhood. and of course, it’s got upright geometry meaning i don’t have to change into high rise pants (or spandex) before i hop on because i can sit up straight while i ride. and, being the design-minded person that i am, the beautiful baby blue paint job and classy mixte frame appeal to my eye. it’s gonna be a fun summer!

cycle chic sunday: vintage ladies

london college of fashion

today i thought it would be fun to share some vintage cycle chic in the form of these photos i found in the london college of fashion archives. there weren’t any notes about these photos, except that these photos were taken in 1947, so i can only guess that it was a little cycling/sporstwear collection, perhaps a student project? i quite like their short sleeved sweaters, culottes, and little scarves! and of course, it’s always nice to admire some fancy vintage bikes and babes!

guest post: the clothes horse

IMG_0341

today i am so excited to have my first ever guest blogger here at calivintage! there are so many incredible bloggers out there that i admire so much, that i thought it would be nice to share some of my favorites in a new ongoing series! to kick things off, i invited one of my best blogger buddies, rebecca of the clothes horse, to share a look with us!

“when erin asked me to write a guest post for her, i immediately thought i should try to pull out a somewhat “calivintage” style outfit. i don’t know if i quite achieved that goal, but i did diverge from my own love of easy dresses in favor of separates. i’ve had these shorts for nearly a year and i live in virginia now where it’s quite warm, but this is the first time i’ve worn them! sometimes it’s really hard to get yourself out of your comfort zone sartorially. however, i do try to attempt it from time to time. i rather like the classic feel of this look and the bright pop of color on an overcast day.

i took these pictures at a little spot overlooking the beach. it’s quite near my home and i like wandering over there in the evening to watch the waves roll in and feel the ocean breeze against my skin. virginia has been absolutely lovely this late spring. it was a long cold winter that never seemed to end (compounded for me personally by a very old, very drafty house that would not stay warm!), so i’m quite excited to now enjoy warm temperatures and sunshine. i might just get some color in my skin this year afterall…”
