momo

this is my little cat friend, momo. you may remember when i introduced her last year in this post when she was just a baby. well, at the time, i thought i would end up showering you with pictures of her all the time, but instead, she hasn’t made an appearance since! so here she is all grown up, though she still looks like a little kitten to me! her name is momo after the book by michael ende (the same author who penned the neverending story), which was a childhood favorite. brendan wanted to name her “money cat” after he read that tortoiseshell cats are good luck, so we usually call her “momo money cat!”

there’s also second sneaky little reason that i’m posting these photos… if you follow me on twitter, you may have seen my tweets about getting a new camera. well, i finally did it! these photos were the first test shots with my new canon 5d! i am so excited to play around with it some more. now let’s just see if these rainy days will let up!

the basics

calivintage: the basics

a couple weeks ago, i realized that i didn’t have a classic white button front shirt. i kinda don’t know how i went for so long without one in my wardrobe, though i have a sneaking suspicion that it’s leftover from the days when i had a job that required me to wear light colored dress shirts and slacks everyday. i guess i just found myself averse to the idea of business attire. it’s funny how a uniform can affect the way you dress when you’re off work. the same thing happened when i worked as a cake decorator in a bakery… i would spend all of my time in beat up jeans and t-shirts, so when i got off work, i would immediately run to the closet to throw on a fancy dress. and you know what? now that i think of it, i don’t have a good basic t-shirt in my wardrobe either! perhaps it’s time to stock up on some more basics…

today is a particularly special day because i’m wearing my brand new lauren moffatt dress! you may remember a few months back, i was fortunate enough to go on a lauren moffatt studio visit to check out her upcoming fall 2011 collection. while i was there, i snapped a few behind-the-scenes photos and basically attempted to contain myself at the sight of so many beautiful pieces. time and again, her collections come out in my top list of favorites, so when they offered to send me a dress from the spring collection, i was over the moon! and you can bet that the moment it arrived, i threw it on with a pair of vintage flats and wore it 2 days in a row, haha! it’s one of those dresses that just feels so right!

cycle chic sunday: bike ride

bike ride

and cycle chic sundays return! this week, i decided to have some fun on polyvore and created two easy outfits for a springtime bike ride around town. i firmly believe that there is no need to wear shorts or pants while riding your bike. just throw on a simple pair of cycle shorts underneath your skirt or dress and you can pretty much wear anything you want!

the first look is decidedly more casual, while the second look is more appropriate if you know you’er going to be hitting a bit more distance around town. my shoe of choice is any pair of flat sandals to keep my feet cool! i also find that it’s helpful to wear a few simple layers, a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes, and to invest in a simple bike basket to hold your purse or bag and whatever other items you might pick up along the way! if you’re planning a more intense ride, you can check out what i wore on my last bike tour.

p.s. you can click through to shop the looks seen above.

p.p.s. in other news, i’m selling my vintage raleigh 3-speed to make room in my apartment for a new bike. if you’re in the bay area, let me know if you’re interested!

q & a with piper weiss, author of ‘my mom, style icon’

today i am super excited to introduce something new here at calivintage! as you all know, i have a seriously strong sartorial connection with my mom, so when i heard about piper weiss’ virtual book tour to promote her new book, my mom, style icon, i was beyond happy to have her stop by and share a little bit about herself and the blog that started it all!

q: were you surprised by the success of your blog?
a: i was. it was an idea that interested me but i didn’t know that it would resonate with so many people of different ages and background. once i started getting submissions in, i knew the photos and the stories shared were just plain fascinating.

q: what is your favorite photo or look of your mom’s that is featured in the book?
a: i love the shot of her with the faux glasses and the moroccan vest where she looks like she’s reading but it’s obvious she’s not.

q: what is the most fabulous thing you’ve seen your mom wear since you started my mom, the style icon?
a: she wears fabulous things everyday. back in the day i’d say i love the photo of her with a bird on her. i’d say it’s pretty fab. these days she doesn’t slack either. she has a sparkly rhinestone trimmed pair of reading glasses as her trademark these days. they always make people giggle but they also kind of look awesome on her.

q: what parts of your personal style did you inherit from your mom?
a: definitely a love of costumes.

q: in creating the blog and the book have you seen any common threads of daughters and moms coming together over fashion?
a: most seem surprised as if they’re looking at their mom for the first time. many say mom never lost her style, and we all agree that they had it going on more than we do now.

q: what is a fashion trend that you’d love to see come back?
a: hair falls. i’d love some really well-made hair ponytails and attachments that you don’t have to go to a salon to have sewn into your head.

the author with her book!
