mendocino part one

calivintage: mendocino part one

hello! i’m back from my long birthday weekend! but before i go on and on about what i’ve been up to for the past four days, i want to take a moment to thank you all so so so much for your lovely birthday wishes. it made me feel extra special, and i really appreciate it!

anyway, as promised, we took lots of pictures of our weekend adventures. this set is from our first day in mendocino. we drove for about three hours through beautiful country roads on a particularly pleasant and sunny day. when we arrived in mendocino, we checked in to our cabin (complete with our own private hot tub), but since there were still some daylight left, we headed out to some cliffs overlooking the ocean to snap some pictures and catch the sunset.

i opted to wear an easy outfit consisting of this adorable dear creatures shift dress that i had wanted last spring when it came out, but failed to pick up when it was still available.  lucky for me, my pal lindsay just so happened to have said dress, and gladly passed it on to me! it makes me feel a bit like a girl scout, which seemed like the appropriate attire for a day spent outdoors. and for the perfect coincidence of the day, i happened to receive this beautiful tote bag from kate spade in the mail right on my birthday! just the thing for a weekend away.

dress: dear creatures, gift from lindsay
coat: post grad coat from modcloth
tights: tabio 150 denier ribbed tights

the loved one

a while back, i posted about a kickstarter project started by hannah (of hannah and landon) and her partner elvia. they were seeking out funding for their upcoming vintage-inspired lingerie line, the loved one. needless to say, the project was a success, so i thought it would only be fitting to post a follow-up and share the collection with you, which is available for pre-sale right now!

i’m smitten with each and every piece, and with such reasonable prices, i might have to go and buy them all! though i will say my favorites are the agony of love and sin in the suburbs.

lake berryessa

calivintage: lake berryessa
a while back, brendan and i were browsing around the web looking at silly top ten lists of natural wonders of the world, mysterious locales, and whatnot. one of the unusual locations that we read about was lake berryessa, which just so happens to be two hours north of where we live.  it’s a reservoir formed by the monticello dam and is the water source for the region.  but most notably, it is the site of an enormous spillway, referred to as “the glory hole.” it’s basically a giant drain that prevents the lake from overflowing.  so we headed out to check out this mysterious glory hole.
after driving along windy roads for what seemed like forever, we found the monticello dam! unfortunately for us, the water level was so low that spillway wasn’t draining water like we had hoped.  it was just a really big cement hole. but here are some pictures of what it looks like when it’s actually doing what it was designed to do. i don’t know that we’ll go back because it’s not a particularly interesting locale, but it was a fun weekend adventure! and we snapped a few photos to remember that we were there.

coat: asos trench coat

sretsis aw 2011

while browsing the web the other day, i came across the sretsis southern hemisphere aw 2011 collection titled  “weekend warriors.” and from the looks of it, it’s appears as though it’s my fair lady meets the little mermaid.  this combination of fancy, frilly dresses with seashell embellishments and gigantic hats has a way of awakening my inner child in the best way possible! if i could choose one piece from the collection it would have to be shameena dress at the top left. unfortunately, it’s up for pre-sale and already sold out, as are most of these pieces on the maximillia website.  it’s too bad that i didn’t find out about this collection sooner, and that money doesn’t grow on trees!

pretty pretty

i’ve been on a makeup kick lately, so i thought i’d share some of my most recent purchases with you!  nicole of fashion forestry recently turned me on to ysl lipstick.  i hadn’t bought myself fancy department store lipstick in a very long time, so i was beyond excited to discover these rouge pur lipsticks in le rouge, le fuchsia, and le orange. besides the fact that the colors are perfect, they glide on like a dream and are intensely moisturizing.  not to mention the classy packaging!
in terms of eyes, i’m loving my laura mercier undercover pot concealer and ysl touche eclat, which is basically a luminating highlighter.   when it comes to eyeliner, i’ve always done the basic black winged liner, and i’ve tried virtually every brand under the sun. i recently discovered this intensely long-lasting, waterproof eyeliner from mac called liquidlast liner.  the girl at the counter told me i could literally go swimming and it wouldn’t come off.  this is pretty awesome since i’ve always struggled with my mascara and eyeliner rubbing off onto the bottom of my eyes by midday. but beware, it’s a very thick and sticky formula, so you’ll need a very precise brush to apply without caking it onto your eyelashes in the process of application.

new year’s resolutions!

i’m gonna be honest with you: i’m kinda like the grinch of new year’s.  as in, i usually think new year’s resolutions are for suckers, and i always refuse to make any.  but i have decided to lighten up and have some fun participating in the ritual this year.  so in honor of the season, i present you with two different new year’s related posts:
1. the talented and beautiful amanda of here’s looking at me kid has been doing a really amazing guest series on new year’s resolutions this week.  i’m a huge fan of her blog, so when she asked me to participate, i was delighted to contribute! for my post, she asked me if i could share some of my tips for sprucing up outfits with accessories like hats, scarves, and sunglasses.  i had a lot of fun going back through my archives and finding examples of how i’ve done it in the past!  if this is something you’re looking to work on this year, go check it out!  if not, she also has a ton more awesome suggestions from some really great bloggers, so it’s definitely worth a look.
2. this year, me and the modcloth blog team decided to embark on a major style resolution project.  each of us chose three style objectives for the year that we’d like to accomplish, and for the next six months, we’re going to write follow-up posts to share our progress.  to read all of our resolutions, and to chime in on our punishments should we fail, go check it out!
