it’s that time of year when more and more fall collections are coming out from all of my favorite independent designers. and my wish list is growing to ridiculous proportions, especially now that i’ve seen the heinui fall 2016 collection! this season, she’s introduced so many beautiful art prints mixed with some of her classic indigo styles in updated fits. i especially love her collections because each piece really stands out on it’s own yet is still surprisingly versatile. she uses beautiful, sturdy textiles like japanese cotton that can be worn simply with flats, while still being able to transition into a more dressy occasion with the right accessories.
outfit: get 15% off at esby apparel!
phew! it’s tuesday, but doesn’t everything feel a bit thrown-off after halloween last night? i’m easing off my candy hangover and back into reality, including election-cycle fatigue. so i thought i’d offer a little pick-me-up before i drop off my vote by mail ballot with a new outfit– and a discount code! i’m sure you’ve noticed that one of my favorite designers lately is the austin-based esby apparel. i don’t remember how i first came across them, but what i do know is that their linen jumpsuits pulled me in and have kept me coming back for the past several seasons. and now that fall is in full swing, i’m so happy to be able to wrap myself in their cotton gauze duffy jumper and dark denim kirby kimono jacket. they are both so perfectly versatile, yet still interesting enough to make a statement on their own, which is something i really value when i’m looking for new clothes to incorporate my wardrobe. these photos were shot on a couple of different days because i’m not afraid to repeat an outfit when i like it this much!
and of course, besides the impeccable design, i really love esby because all of their clothes are proudly made in the usa using high quality materials like linen, cotton, and wool. and each season, they update and improve the fit of the clothes based on experience and feedback, meaning that you can always expect something well made and ready to wear. so in the spirit of ethical business and civic duty in this fair country, we’ve teamed up to offer you a discount code!
use code “CALI15” now through election day (nov. 8) for 15% off your purchase at esby apparel!
happy halloween!
had to snap a few photos of the halloween costumes this year! edie is wearing a little vintage dress with cat ears from janie and jack and little black patent leather elephantito mary janes. and adam is wearing a vintage-inspired pumpkin costume that i made from scratch, in linen of course! hope you’re enjoying the holiday!
elizabeth suzann cold weather collection
as i’m sure you know by now, i have been a big fan of elizabeth suzann since her very first days as a designer. so it is no surprise that i am hugely excited about the release of her new cold weather collection. granted, i don’t live in a very cold clime, but the collection was very thoughtfully created in a similar vein as their signature collection. they are all timeless classics that may change and evolve over time, but that will remain a core set of garments offered year round for chilly summer evenings or crisp winter days alike.
and of course, as you have come to expect from elizabeth suzann, everything has been created with the same design philosophy: to make getting dressed easy and enjoyable, while being comfortable and functional. but one thing that really stands out about the new collection is the story about how they’ve improved their supply chain. of the change, they said:
with the shift to a permanent cold weather collection, fabric selection felt more significant than any other seasonal collection. we decided to make a monumental shift to using all locally woven wool fabric from our good friends at tennessee textile mill right here in nashville. the wool yarn is also sourced domestically in oregon at imperial stock ranch. the implications of moving not only to locally woven fabric but also domestically sourced wool yarn are many and significant, including a complicated supplier process, in addition to an increase in price to account for both the vastly improved yarn and local production. these were obstacles we considered and ultimately decided were worth overcoming, and we hope that you agree.
the end result is an incredibly luxurious collection of wearable garments that will act as mainstays in your closet that can be worn for years to come.
an ode to vintage flax
i’m not sure if you follow our vintage shop on instagram, but if you do, then you know how much we love vintage flax brand. whenever i go out thrifting, i pay close attention to the textures of the fabrics to try and pluck out anything made of cotton, linen, silk, or wool. and whenever i find something by flax or eileen fisher or brynn walker or any one of those brands, i always do a little happy dance. i especially like the ’90s silhouettes. they often come in matching pant sets or as oversized jackets. dresses are harder to find, but occasionally i score something really amazing like this beautiful rust colored linen duster dress. it has a sort of artsy vibe to it, the type of clothing our mothers wore when we were kids that seemed way too grown-up while we were going through our doc martin and baby tee phase, but that is so perfectly nostalgic now that we’re older. the other thing i love about a lot of these brands is that they tend to be oversized and able to fit a wide variety of shapes and sizes to accommodate our ever-changing bodies. i’ve gone through two pregnancies in the past several years, so i really appreciate being able to find clothing that is not only beautiful, but that is forgiving enough to be worn no matter where my body is in the process. we all have our ideal goals in mind, but that doesn’t mean we should wait until we look exactly the way we think we should in order to wear beautiful clothes. flax has generous sizing for the plus sized woman and a petite size for smaller gals.
and let’s not forget the most delightful thing about flax: the positive affirmations on the labels! i just looked through my closet and found two labels that read–in all caps, “UTOPIA IS A STATE OF MIND” and “I APPRECIATE MYSELF SINCERELY I LOVE MYSELF AND EVERYONE DEARLY” they always give me a good chuckle. the brand is actually still around, but sadly, they no longer feature these fun labels. i think we should petition them to re-release a collection of some of their ’90s styles and to bring back the labels! perhaps we’ll have to do a flax + calivintage collaboration!! i kid, i kid.

gravel & gold fall 2016
you may be familiar with gravel & gold’s iconic boob print seen ’round the web, but what you may not know is that they have also been producing beautiful collections for several seasons running! way back in the day, when i still lived in san francisco, i would stop by their shop in the mission district to buy gifts and things and even got a dress from one of their very first collections. since then, they’ve only gotten better. and their new fall 2016 collection might be my favorite yet! i’ve been more and more drawn to art prints, so the night landscape print is hitting all the right notes. i love that they used it on a bunch of different pieces including a dress, top, pants, and jacket so you can go all out with a matching set or keep it subtle as just a little statement.
everything is up for pre-sale right now, so you better head over and place your order because i have a feeling they’re going to sell out quick! shop gravel & gold.
outfit: mom uniform
i haven’t gotten a haircut since a couple of months before edie was born, and she’s getting awfully close to six months old! this mop of hair is looking rough.
i accidentally tossed my last pair of contact lenses down the drain last week, so i’ve been stuck wearing glasses until a new box arrives in the mail. not a huge deal for most, but i’m blind as a bat and have issues with lens distortion wearing glasses, so i feel like a geeky parody of myself. i’ve been comically tripping over things and pushing my glasses up the bridge of my nose like a total nerd.
but at least i’ve got my mom uniform. my wardrobe as of late has been a mix of vintage and new pieces that are made with really sturdy, washable fabrics that i can wear over and over again without having to worry about dirty toddler hands or baby puke. i could literally wear this outfit every day. a vintage top made out of a really nice, textured woven cotton, kamm pants in tobacco, a vintage denim jacket, my trusty j.w. hulme legacy bag, and my new mari giudicelli leblon mules.
and then of course, there are the little details. my young frankk orb cuff, this incredibly charming little opal radium ring by laura lee jewelry paired with my giantlion scoop ring.
good night, day fall 2016 (pt. 2)
and without skipping a beat, part two of the good night, day fall 2016 lookbook. all of the designs are so thoughtful and beautiful, made better knowing that designer tara-lynn morrison uses only sustainable yarns fairly sourced from south america and only her hands to knit each and every order. i’ve been following her since i started blogging, and each season i think that she can’t top herself, and yet she does! her latest round of knits make me wish i could move up to canada and swath myself in her luxuriously soft shawls and toques.
if you like what you see, make sure to check out part one of her collection and to head on over to shop good night, day.
good night, day fall 2016 (pt. 1)
i have long been a fan of canadian designer tara-lynn morrison and her knitwear brand good night, day. i think our online friendship began right around the same time that i became a blogger over 8 years ago! which is truly impressive when i really start to think about it. she’s been dreaming up beautiful knits for years and hand-knitting every single piece in her shop, and continuing to inspire me as i follow along on her journey. with fashion, it’s so easy to get swept away with the latest trends or the most sought-after labels without thinking too much about who made them or where they came from. but tara-lynn’s work stops you in your tracks and helps to shake you out of your fast-fashion trance. all of her fibers are ethically sourced from south america and every single piece has been knit by her. when you make a purchase from good night, day you are contributing to the slow fashion movement. her work is consciously political, sustainable, and beautiful.
and this season, she does not disappoint. looking at these images, i want to step right into the dreamy world that she’s created, draped in luxurious textures and feeling the crisp autumn air against my skin. my favorite is definitley the dark umber inklin sweater seen above. it seems like the perfect thing to wear with a pair of jeans or thrown over a simple dress on a chilly day.
calivintage x solly baby fall 2016
a couple of months back, i had the extraordinary opportunity to work with solly baby on their fall 2016 lookbook! our household is really big on babywearing (even adam!), so we were really delighted to be involved. and i got the chance to try out some of the fall collection before they hit the stores, including the currently sold-out but soon to be back-in-stock rifle x solly baby wrap seen here in the photos.
poor little edie was unexpectedly sick the day of the shoot, so she ended up sleeping on my chest throughout the entire shoot, which actually turned out to be the perfect thing for her. holding them close like this makes all of the difference because it helps them to feel calm and comfortable, while i’m able to keep my hands free. it’s a win all the way around!
