true story: i’ve been a fan of children’s knitwear designer misha and puff since before i even knew if i wanted kids! and now that i have two of my own, my love for them has grown even more. knitwear is so perfect for little ones because it’s so soft and stretchy, while still being a tad more interesting than your standard issue onesie. don’t get me wrong, i still love a good onesie, but i am absolutely nuts over all of misha and puff’s adorable designs. this season is decidedly playful with stripes and geometric patterns, rich colors, and a perfect confetti yarn that looks like birthday cake. i also love that each season mixes and matches perfectly with the last so that you get plenty of wear out of whatever your choose, just as long as your baby fits in it!

personally, i’m starting to come to terms with the fact that edie will be my last baby, so i’m even more tempted to splurge on all of the cute clothes for her. in a few months time, i won’t even be able to call her a baby anymore. so yeah, i don’t think i’ll be able to resist a few of these pieces. especially with a family portrait coming up for the holidays!

little known fact: i have terrible vision. i’ve been wearing contact lenses for so long that most people have no idea i need glasses to see. it’s funny, too, because i had to wear glasses for so many years that i still think of them as being a part of my identity, even though i don’t tend to wear them outside of the house all that often these days. but wearing contacts every single day is not quite so easy on the eyes. i’d been meaning to get some new glasses to give my eye balls a break, but i’ve been so busy lately that it’s been hard for me to find time to even pick out a pair! so i was really excited when eyeconic asked if i’d be interested in partnering up to give them a try! i picked out a pair of non-prescription sunglasses that shipped out right away, and also found a fun new pair of prescription glasses that came with scratch-resistant polycarbonate lenses and uv protection, which is especially helpful in avoiding my coke bottle lens problem! yes, my vision is that bad.

the new lauren winter fall 2016 collection is hitting all the right notes. looking through the collection, all i want is to be swathed in layers and layers of her beautiful garments. as i dream of cooler temperatures, i’ve been imagining lightweight turtlenecks layered beneath dresses and jumpsuits, so you know this collection is speaking to me. and as we’ve come to expect of lauren winter, there is a huge focus on beautiful textiles: hemp, silk, cotton, linen, denim. the types of clothes that have excellent drape and feel while still being totally wearable and washable for years to come.

after school snack: beet, yam, and broccoli tots

adam is back in school, which means that he’s super hungry when he gets home! and having a quick snack ready is my first line of defense against toddler meltdowns. during the summer break when he was home all of the time, i kinda slipped into the bad habit of feeding him a lot of packaged snacks. they aren’t terrible or anything, but a fresh start to the new year has got me brainstorming ways to feed him quick, easy, and healthful meals and snacks. so when got milk? asked me if i’d be interested in partnering up to share a fun and savory milk pairing for kids, i knew just the recipe to share!

adam is pretty good about eating fresh fruit, but i have to be sneaky when it comes to convincing him to eat his veggies. thankfully, i’ve figured out a way to pack in tons of nutrients into these colorful little tots! the concept is pretty simple: swap out potatoes for any veggie you want. three favorites around this house are beets, yams, and broccoli. and they certainly aren’t just for kids. adam likes them plain, but i like to toss in a few spices for myself and dip them in a chipotle aioli sauce. add a heaping glass of organic whole milk and enjoy!

Ingredients

12 oz. veggie of your choice (we used beets, yams, and broccoli)
1 cup shredded sharp white cheddar
1/2 cup panko or bread crumbs
1 large egg
salt and pepper to taste
a side of chipotle aioli, mayonnaise, or ketchup

Instructions

preheat your oven to 425 degrees fahrenheit
blanch your veggies in boiling water until slightly soft. the cooking times will vary depending on the vegetable you use, but no more than 2-3 minutes each. shock in cold water and drain. use a paper towel to remove excess moisture if necessary.
in a bowl, combine veggies with cheese, panko, and egg. quickly stir them together to incorporate, then drop them in the food processor and pulse a few times until they are chopped finely. you can play around with the texture you prefer.
using a tablespoon to measure the size of the tots, form them into little spheres and line them on a baking sheet. spray with cooking oil.
bake until golden brown, about 10 minutes.
enjoy with a tall glass of california milk!

i’ve gotten into a habit of preparing three batches at the beginning of the week and then storing them in the refrigerator so they’re ready to bake right as adam is arriving home from school. he’s a bit young, but he does enjoy helping me shape them into tots as well! if i make a handful for him and myself every day, they usually last all week!

outfit: the basics

it’s funny, looking at this outfit, i’m suddenly reminded of my “summer uniform” from last year. it was really similar: a statement hat, a cream top, wide leg jeans. it’s a little bit updated for the season, but it’s essentially the same outfit. and apparently a go-to look of mine. i think we all have a tendency to gravitate towards certain silhouettes that make us feel good, and this is one of those looks for me. now that the seasons are changing, i’ve been transitioning to wearing wide leg jeans because they have more of a fall vibe, but the loose shape still keeps you cool on these hot late summer days. these are also incredibly flattering, in my opinion. i’m four months postpartum and don’t feel self conscious in them at all. if anything, i feel like the high rise gives me back some of the shape that i lost during my pregnancy, which still hasn’t quite bounced back.

in other news, i’m standing in front of the historic mod building here in redlands. i posted a photo of it on instagram a while back, but didn’t mention that it’s actually been sold and getting ready for commerce. it’s walking distance from my home and has been standing here empty for a number of years, but thankfully there is a new plan to renovate and turn it into a fancy food court of sorts. it’s one of the few original packing houses still standing in this town, which was once a major distributor of oranges in southern california. the more you know… haha.

outfit: the refashioners diy jacket

you may remember last summer, i took part in portia lawrie’s the refashioners challenge and made myself this simple wrap top out of a thrifted men’s shirt. well, this season, she asked me if i’d be interested in taking on a new challenge. despite my success last time around, i was still feeling pretty intimidated. i don’t know how to draft a pattern and my sewing skills are still sitting somewhere in the beginner level. but despite those restrictions, i still love a challenge, however daunting it may seem.

the new challenge? refashion a pair of jeans (or two or three or ten) to create an entirely new garment. i have to admit, this was a but perplexing at first since the only denim clothing i own are pairs of jeans. but after spending some time thinking about my favorite simple designs, i came up with an idea: a poncho! and yes, this was in large part due to the fact that a poncho is essentially two pieces of fabric sewn together with a hole for the head. my version is simply open in the front with some sleeves attached for a sort of modified poncho jacket. if you’re interested in trying it out yourself, grab a few pairs of old jeans and head on over to the diy!

summer is officially over at our house. the fall semester at adam’s school started on monday, so he’s off to his toddler program once again. and while a backpack isn’t yet a requirement at his age, and my own school days are well behind me, i still couldn’t resist getting matching backpacks to welcome the fall season. because really, whether you’re 2 or 32 (cough), headed to play school or high school, a backpack will always come in handy. so of course, i was very excited to partner with my friends at backpacks.com to share my personal experience. with a new baby to look after, i’ve got tons more stuff i need to bring with me for pretty much any excursion out of the house, so my new strategy involves two backpacks: one for myself filled with diapers and baby things, and one for adam so he can bring along anything he might want or need. he loves packing his bag before we head out, and toting it around with him wherever he goes. and it helps to lighten my own load just a little bit.

over the past couple of years, i’ve been wearing a lot of crop tops. and while i still love them to death, lately i’ve been having fun playing around with different proportions. especially now that we’re transitioning into fall and i’m itching to change up my style a little bit, while still keeping cool in these hot southern california temperatures. this loose, swingy dress by jane sews is definitely long enough to wear on it’s own, but it’s also really great for layering.when the weather gets a little cooler, i plan to pull it on over a dark turtleneck and under an easy trench coat for a completely different look.

solid state sandal workshop!

several months ago, i got my very first pair of custom-made mules from solid state. they were handmade-to-order in los angeles by shoe designer julio chavez, and have quickly become a favorite. and being the collector that i am, i now want to own one of every single design he makes! so of course you know i was beyond excited when he let me know that he has just opened his new chinatown studio and will now be hosting sandal-making workshops. his first two classes will take place on september 24 & september 25. for $200, you get to learn a new skill and walk away in a new pair of custom slides. needless to say, i will be there, and you should come, too!

the new young frankk fall 2016 collection is out and it is so good! i have long been a fan of hand-themed jewelry, so those earrings up top are a dream come true! now my only question is whether or not i can pull them off. if you aren’t looking to make quite as big of a statement, the richmond-based designer christine young has also come up with plenty of other options in both gold and sterling silver. i really love the mix of geometric and organic shapes. everything is interesting, but still wearable enough for every day.
