i’m a pinterest ambassador!

calivintage_0524-main

i think i mentioned it in a few places on social media, but it always feels more official when i make an announcement on my blog. so if you hadn’t gathered from the title, i’m a pinterest ambassador! the brand has just started the program, so it’s the first time that they’re delving into local events, and i’m super excited to be involved. basically, i’ll be hosting a series of #pinmeetup gatherings in the los angeles area over the course of the next year. and i’ve pretty much got carte blanche when it comes to what we do! the first event is all planned-out, but the flyer isn’t ready yet, so i’ll just tease you a little bit: we’ll be meeting at a very cool shop in silverlake for sips and snacks, vintage shopping, and two really awesome diy workshops to be announced! the whole setting will be appropriately pinterest-worthy, and i’m so excited to share more in the coming weeks.

i’ve already got a few more events in the works for the near-future, so i promise to keep you up-to-date on all of my pinterest goings-on! in the meantime, i’ll be sharing a few posts about how i use pinterest as a blogger, and will be sure to post lots of pretty pictures and recaps of all our events for those of you who can’t make it out. and don’t forget to check the pinterest events page to see if any events are headed your way, too!

outfit: summer staples

calivintage_0352

if i had to pick only one outfit to wear for the rest of the summer, this look would be it. i’ve been kinda playing around with the same silhouette for the past several weeks, but i think i finally nailed it. the top is a vintage find from hawaii made of raw silk that came as part of a three piece set with a skirt and kimono jacekt. it was originally much longer, but i decided that it would be perfect as a little crop top to pair with high rise pants and skirts. and what i love about these pants is that they’re a nice, sturdy denim with a super high rise, but the wide leg and cropped fit keep me cool and comfortable. i seriously don’t know how people wear skinny jeans on super hot days, they drive me insane! finish with a pair of clogs and my trusty summer hat, and i think i’m just about set for the rest of the season.

down time

20150626_calivintage_0508

i don’t think there is anything more precious in the world than a sleeping babe. especially as adam has gotten bigger, he’s constantly on the go. running around from room to room, crashing little toy cars, pulling out crayons to fill pages and pages of artwork, digging holes in the backyard. so it really does feel like a special treat each time i get to see him so still and calm and relaxed.  i could not resist snapping a few photos of him during an especially long nap time last week. he was all wrapped up in this beautiful elephant zoo blanket that we received from sture & folke. it was handmade in switzerland by designer and mother of two, karin stenmarck. and as soon as we received it in the mail, adam was so excited to examine each tiny animal and to learn their names. you can’t see it in these photos, but the opposite side is made with velvet and linen with a little row of ribbons for tiny fingers to play with. i remember when adam was smaller than he is now, he was obsessed with ribbons and tags, so of course i really appreciate such a thoughtful little design element on an already excellent blanket. it’s a little pricier than some of our nursery items, but i would put this high on the list of gifts to give if you happen to know anyone who is expecting!

going green

11372550_1462299750749811_1752158693_n

one of the great things about moving into this new old house is that there’s lots of work to be done. i know that sounds daunting to some, but i see it as an opportunity. it’s a chance for me to make it my own. if someone had bought it and renovated before me, they probably would have gutted the bathroom and removed the old hex tiles and the strange art deco wall sconces that are marked with rust spots. they would have pulled out the old kitchen cabinets, sad as they are, and replaced the vintage tiles with some dark slab of granite. sure, it would be functional, but i can tell you right now, it certainly wouldn’t be pretty.

so i’ve taken on the massive project of attempting to restore this place to it’s original charm. and as i sit here day after day, working on one project after the other and planning my dream house, i’ve started to see possibilities beyond just the cosmetic. it started with the centralized air conditioning. this house doesn’t have it. it’s so hot in this part of the world, it’s hard to believe people have survived every summer in this house without central air conditioning for nearly 100 years. but that’s what got me thinking. perhaps people have survived because the house is efficient enough just the way it is. or at least close to it. perhaps there are energy-efficient alternatives to just slapping a big old refrigeration unit on the roof and adding pollution to the environment and digits to my energy bill.

so that’s was how i fell down the energy-efficiency rabbit hole. i’ve been doing research on all of the ways that i can bring this house into the 21st century, not with the decor, but with smart energy alternatives. i’m by no means an expert, but i figured i might as well share what i’ve been thinking about!

1. an energy-efficient ducted evaporative cooler. yes, in other words, a swamp cooler. but a centralized, ducted swamp cooler that will look and feel just like a traditional refrigeration unit, but for a fraction of the price. we live in a hot summer mediterranean climate, which means the additional moisture in the air will be welcome relief from the dry air outside. and i really appreciate that it won’t be adding as much pollution to the air by using excessive amounts of energy to operate. i’m sure there will be a couple of days out of the year when it won’t work quite as well as we’d like it to, but did i mention that people have somehow survived in this house sans a/c for nearly 100 years? i think we’ll pull through.

11380952_100486446957685_692902044_n
2. recycled denim insulation. one of the next projects i’ll be tackling is putting up insulation and drywall in my 900 sq. ft. detached garage so i can fulfill my dream of turning it into a studio space. one of the first things i found in my search was recycled denim insulation. it’s eco-friendly, energy efficient, and, considering my occupation, it’s kinda fun knowing that the walls of my garage will be filled with old pairs of jeans. there’s even a program called blue jeans go green that accepts donations of old denim jeans to recycle into insulation that they then donate to communities in need. there are a bunch of retailers who accept donations including madewell, j.crew, and neiman marcus. and for the record, i was not asked to write about this program or paid to mention it. i just think it’s really cool!

3. solar panels. what used to be a very expensive luxury, has now become a super smart and affordable option. we have several friends who install solar panels for a living, and they’ve been introducing us to different options for affordable installation. if we’re successful in keeping our energy use low, we might not even need the solar panels, but it’s something that i definitely want to explore.

10945338_622917771170438_1144859170_n
4. vintage! how perfectly convenient that one way to reduce your carbon footprint is to buy used and vintage furniture and decor (and clothes and anything else). yes, some modern conveniences are better purchased new, but i’ve been having a lot of fun searching websites like krrb and taking frequent trips to flea markets, thrift stores, and antique shops on the hunt for a mix of art deco, mid century modern, and 1970s bohemian styles to decorate my home. they just don’t make furniture like they used to, and if you find a quality pieces, with a little bit of elbow grease, you can count on it lasting for many more years to come.

and the same concept also applies to the house itself. i think i’ve already mentioned that we plan to refinish the current wood flooring. instead of demolishing the whole thing and installing something new, i’m willing to accept a few stains here and there. it adds character to the house, and nothing beats the quality of vintage wood floors. i’ll also be making an effort to search through salvage yards for supplies before heading to the big box stores when it comes to renovations.

11348158_1620097031600920_2145740147_n
5. grey water. specifically, we’re looking into residential grey water irrigation. if you hadn’t heard, california is in the middle of a record-breaking drought. it hardly makes sense to be watering our plants with actual drinking water! and while some of these systems can be really expensive to install, there are affordable options. in particular, i’m curious about trying a laundry-to-landscape system that recycles the water from your washing machine to irrigate your plants outside. and in the city of redlands where we live, they’re currently converting the irrigation downtown to a grey water system, which makes me hopeful that there will be some programs to incentivize their installation in the near future.

6. drought-resistant landscaping. i suppose this is a no-brainer considering that drought i mentioned, but you’d be surprised to see that the status quo in most suburban cities still includes a lush, manicured lawn. our house certainly came with two beautiful lawns when we bought it. we’ve been maintaining them in the interim, but i’m excited to look into ways to reduce our water usage while still enjoying the outdoors.

have you made any energy-efficient or water-saving renovations or quick fixes for your home? am i missing anything crucial in my list?

outfit: the long and short

it’s hot outside, you guys. over the past several weeks, i’d been seriously trying to let my hair grow out again, but when my pal and stylist called me up and asked me where i’d been, you better bet i caved and asked him to hack off a few inches. besides the fact that i always feel most like myself when i have a bob, i could not bear to feel my hair on my neck in this heat for another day. i have really dark, thick, and dense hair that gets so hot, i feel like i’m wearing a helmet! if shannon hadn’t come to the rescue, i may have inadvertently played out this scene from napoleon dynamite when pedro shaves his head. speaking of shannon, he just started working at a new salon in hollywood called pretty pretty collective. if you’re looking for a new stylist, i strongly urge you to try him! he’s been a friend for years and he’s the only person i trust to go near my hair.

one thing that is getting longer is my hemlines. a couple years ago, you would’ve seen me hacking this dress to an obscenely short length. but these days, i barely even wear dresses or skirts, and when i do, the longer the better. and really like the proportions of this one, and now i kinda wish i had it in a million different colors. because, yes, i am one of those crazy people who buys the same thing in multiples if i really like it!

outfit: ti amo

calivintage_0124

one of the things i’ve noticed about my style is that even when i pare things down, i’m always compelled to infuse a sense of humor into what i wear. it’s very hard for me to be completely literal or completely serious about what i wear. no matter what image i’m trying to convey, at the end of the day, they’re just clothes. and i can’t resist sneaking in a little bit of the tongue-in-cheek. this outfit is pretty simple and carefree, the type of thing i wear most days. but of course, my pants are kinda crazy and my top has “ti amo” plastered in bright orange red right across the front. the pants are vintage navy deadstock and they are so insanely stiff and starched that it will probably take several washings to get them softer. but they’re going to be fun to wear-in throughout the summertime, much like a pair of shrink-to-fit levi’s, they’ll end up with their own unique fade lines and marks. i should probably do a before and after photo shoot to show how much they change over the next couple of months! and the top is by one of my longtime favorite designers, family affairs. i really love the swingy, cropped shape. and of course, the lettering is so perfectly retro. can’t you see it going so well with a pair of patchwork pants? speaking of which, i actually have the perfect pair to go with it!

giveaway: win $120 to zimmerman shoes!

calivintage_0408

today i am very pleased to announce my latest giveaway courtesy of zimmerman shoes. we currently own both the 1962 milo boots and stevie sandals, and they are hands down our favorite baby shoes! zimmerman is a family-owned and operated business that started in 1962 by the current owners’ great-grandfather milo. he purchased the historic kepner scott shoe factory, which was built in pennsylvania in 1888, and the family has been hand-crafting shoes there ever since. many of the current styles are heritage designs from their long history as a brand, all made by hand right here in the united states. if you are going to buy a nice, solid pair of shoes, then you should definitely consider this brand. in particular, adam has been wearing his milo boots for the past few months and they have held up beautifully. he really gives his shoes a beating between running around in the dirt and dragging his feet on the sidewalk while he rides around on his push bike. and if i give him the option to choose what shoes he wants to wear for the day, he always grabs those boots! i’m a sucker for the way the cream leather wears and ages over time, and i really like the weight of the soles. the perfect step up from a soft soled shoe, but strong enough for a toddler without being so hard that he can’t feel his feet on the ground. anyway, i think you get the picture. we really love these shoes and i am so happy to have teamed up with them to offer you the chance to win $120. just enough for two pairs of these classic shoes.

outfit: mother’s daughter

calivintage_0191

if i had enough of them, i would spend the rest of the summer wearing jumpsuits and overalls every day of the week. i just cannot deny the comfort and practicality of a one piece. the only catch is that things can get kinda monotonous if you wear the exact same thing every day, so i’ve been playing around with different variations on the theme. a few years ago, if you’d asked me about culottes, i would have politely told you that i wouldn’t be caught dead in them. my mom has always been a huge fan of the silhouette, so i think part of my aversion had to do with some sort of deep seated rebellion against anything my mother would wear. but isn’t it funny how a few years pass by, and suddenly all of those cool ’70s clothes your mom was always trying to convince you to wear actually sound like a good idea?

at this point, i’ve totally accepted that i am my mother’s daughter. heck, we’re practically identical! and i will not deny that she is single handedly responsible for my obsession with vintage. and i still call her up asking for help when i start a sewing project, or want to do anything even remotely crafty. and we’re both the types who seem to have an endless well of energy, much to the dismay of anyone we convince to go along with us. a quick trip to the store turns into a day-long antiquing adventure, or a run to home depot means you’ve just signed up to help finish three new home improvement projects. ah, such is life.

olive summer 2015

olive_ss15_secondtreatment-4_1024x1024

school’s out for summer! and despite the ridiculously warm temperatures, summer has always been my favorite season. it probably has something to do with the aforementioned lack of school when i was a kid, and the fact that i grew up in sunny southern california. so of course, it’s an exciting time when the resort and summer collections come out, like olive summer 2015. shop owner laura uhlir teamed up with the talented jackie lee young for her latest lookbook with an exploration of “shifting scale, sliding perspective, and the interplay between two forms.” they were inspired by “guy bourdin’s early 70s work and the visual play between the 90s supermodel trinity: naomi campbell, linda evangelista, and christy turlington. the juxtaposition of height and slight presented the perfect opportunity to toy with the eye.”

the result is stunning. not only is it a treat for the eye, but olive is serving up some really awesome summer style from some of my favorite independent designers like samantha pleet, shop evens, and more.
