outfit: calivintage + bon george made in la

you may remember a few weeks back, i wrote about the launch of bon george, an la-based clothing company focused on socially and environmentally conscious practices. they’ve just started a blog series spotlighting local people, and asked me a few interview questions which you can read right here. i got to pick out a piece from their inaugural collection, which i may have already worn too many times to mention… it’s made with salvaged vintage rayon in a limited edition run right here in los angeles. i love the faded red color, the button-front, and the perfect longer length. it’s already become a key piece for my summer wardrobe to pair with a simple t-shirts on hot summer days.

head on over to the bon george blog to read my interview!

reformation “i’m up here” collection

eco-conscious clothing company reformation hasn’t really been on my radar much. i’d heard of the brand before, but they really didn’t grab my attention until today when they launched their latest aptly (or amply?) titled collection, i’m up here, featuring summer styles made specifically with busty ladies in mind. the collection is designed so that you can conceal a bra, and has more generous proportions along the bust line to accommodate women who wear a c-cup or higher. while i have my doubts about a few of these pieces working for my well above a c-cup body, i do appreciate the concept behind the designs. i don’t know how many times i’ve tried on a dress only to discover that i need to size up just so that the bust will fit, leaving the waist, hips, and everything else just a little bit too big for my frame. i know it’s kind of a niche issue, but hey, unless you’re a fit model, you probably have fit issues of your own.

while not every style is quite up my alley and some of the pieces still require a strapless bra (which isn’t very easy if you’re over a dd), there are some promising looks in the bunch. now that i’m living in such a warm climate, i really do appreciate the odd strategic cut out if i can still conceal my bra. and i’m not always totally opposed to showing a bit of skin if it means i’m not revealing way more than i bargained for. and of course, i always appreciate a company that focuses on eco-friendly and sustainable practices. so bravo to reformation for capturing a new market! i’ll be keeping an eye out from now on.

adam: 19 weeks

calivintage_0141

it’s been harder to get pictures of adam lately. he’s always wiggling around like a little salamander, trying his best to crawl around. as you can see in these photos, he wasn’t particularly interested in my efforts to photograph him in this silly pixie hoodie that i found at the thrift store. every time i tried to sit him down, he kinda rolled forward and onto his belly and started kicking around. this boy wants to be mobile!

rachel comey resort 2015

Rachel Comey PS 2015 Lookbook

oh, rachel comey. she lured me in with her shoes, and now i’m becoming more and more obsessed with her clothes each season. her resort 2015 collection is hitting all the right notes for me. she’s got plenty of navy blue, which i can’t seem to get enough of these days, there’s an awesome jumpsuit, and plenty of interesting silhouettes. and i kinda really want those cropped, wide leg jeans. and she’s somehow managed to make me consider trying pleated, high rise jeans? seriously, save for a few looks, i kinda wish i was the girl who walks around wearing these looks.

want: candela millicent dress

3

i first saw this dress at the candela spring 2014 presentation back in september. and i kid you not, i haven’t been able to get it out of my mind since. what’s more is that i had to go and check the candela site only to discover that it’s now on sale. sitting there, taunting and teasing me in all of it’s impractical glory, begging for a reason to be bought. i try to imagine just hanging it on my wall, tossing it on to lounge around the house on lazy afternoons, or wearing it while i frolic in a field of flowers in the hazy setting sunlight. a girl can dream, can’t she?

peter jensen resort 2015

and oh how i love to see the peter jensen twist on his latest muse. this season, he focused on yoko ono, and i have to say, even without knowing very much of her work, the whole thing is quite a visual treat. yes, right down to the orthopedic granny socks.  i love the way jensen can really tow the line between wearable pieces and conceptually interesting collections. i wouldn’t be so bold as to wear one of these looks head to toe, but i certainly wouldn’t mind taking a few cues. and i certainly don’t mind picking apart all of the different references to ono and her body of work, either.

crafty

since having adam, i’ve spent a lot of time at home. i’m on an extended leave from work so i can take care of him, and it’s the first time that i’ve spent so much time in the house in the past three-and-a-half years since starting my day job. the first couple of months were spent recovering and just soaking up all of that wonderful newborn magic. i didn’t really get bored or anxious because i was so wrapped up in baby world. i still am for the most part, but lately i’ve gotten a serious crafting itch.

growing up, i was constantly surrounded by arts and crafts projects. my mom was always working on various projects and setting me up with things to do of my own. cross-stitch, crochet, sewing, painting, weaving, rug hooking, you name it. i learned to be patient, sitting at the kitchen table or on the couch with a tedious little project in hand. my mom always nearby to help me if i got stuck. so perhaps having a baby has awoken some long dormant nostalgia for those days spent with my mom. i scroll through pinterest and find myself interested in picking up all of those old hobbies, something to do with my hands between baby naps and walks around the neighborhood.

i already finished my first sewing project last week, and i’ve been hankering to make a trip downtown to the garment district to pick up some fancy new fabrics like raw silk and linen to make a few simple tops and things. now i just have to reign it in or else i’m going to end up with an explosion of unfinished projects piling up around me!

for the new dad

i’ve been buying father’s day gifts for my dad since i was a little kid, but this year there’s a new dad to celebrate! it’s so funny to now add the title of dad to my partner brendan. i want him to feel special for his first father’s day, especially because he’s hardly had a moment to himself between work, finishing grad school, and taking care of our new little baby dude. so when east dane asked me if i’d like to pull together a father’s day gift guide, i knew right away that it’d be dedicated to brendan and all of those first time dads out there who need a special treat.

oliver people’s gregory sunglasses – he’s been meaning to get a cool pair of sunglasses for ages, but never seems to wanna bite the bullet when we’re out shopping!

gitman vintage tiger tiger shirt – it’s always good to have a little bit of fun with your clothes after work and on the weekends. i know brendan would like the subtle, yet playful design on this cool short-sleeve shirt.

the golden age of dc comics – brendan is a serious comic book nerd. i know he’s more of a marvel man, but i think he’d have fun flipping through this coffee table book.

sperry topsider classic boat shoes – just the other day, brendan was commenting that he wore through his favorite top siders. sometimes a practical gift is the best kind.

form function form button stud timex minute man watch – watches are by far my best stand-by when it comes to giving brendan a gift. this man loves his watches and has a box full of different straps to switch out to change their look.

scotch & soda striped swim trunks – these would go great along with a little poolside date.

brooks b17 saddle – we’ve gone on countless bike tours together over the years. even though we don’t get to ride bikes nearly as much as we used to, i think this would be a nice, sentimental gift.

herschel supply co. backpack – don’t make daddy carry around a silly diaper bag! this backpack is a way better option for both parents, don’t you think?

adam: week 18

calivintage_com_0599

i know, i know. you’ve seen this hat three times already… we’re just getting good mileage out of it! that and it’s just a matter of what ends up getting photographed more. i swear, he wears other stuff (see also: my instagram)! i guess he was just more willing to sit still whenever i put him in that hat. maybe it’s like when you put a harness on a cat and they suddenly just lay there motionless? i kid, i kid.

anyway, i’m pretty much caught up on these weekly posts, which means i won’t be doubling up on them any more! and i promise that next week he won’t be wearing a sailor hat.

outfit: handmade

if you follow me on instagram, you may remember that i posted this little gem a few weeks back. smitten with all of the jumpsuits i’d been seeing online, but a little wary of the price tags, i decided to take things into my own hands and try sewing-up something of my own. i picked up this navy cotton/linen blend, and after browsing through vintage patterns on etsy, settled on a few good options to try. mind you, i haven’t sewn anything since i was in high school, and even then, i think my mom probably ended up doing the bulk of the work. obviously i didn’t want anything too complicated, so i went with this oversized style, essentially made with four panels of fabric.

i followed the directions without doing a proper fitting, so it wasn’t a huge surprise when i discovered that it was several sizes too big. a few alterations later and here’s my progress. i think i might make the legs a bit more tapered, but either way, it’s been good practice and now i’m feeling confident enough to try something a bit more complicated.

as far as the styling, the look is a little more cabbages & roses/mori girl/kinfolk than i had intended. i had just bought that fedora about an hour before taking these pictures, and i happened to have pretty dirty hair, so on it went. that coupled with the linen is definitely giving a more crafty vibe than i’m used to, but i still really liked the look. so here’s to more sewing projects this summer!
