outfit: a family affairs midsummer dream treat!

calivintage_0864

i have always been a big fan of vintage workwear. i love the mix of retro vibes with a very utilitarian aesthetic. so of course, i was immediately drawn to the family affairs river jumpsuit. they are inspired by a pair of mechanics coveralls, but made in a bright and crisp pastel blue and white cotton perfect for hot summer days. it looks really cute on it’s own, but i couldn’t resist pairing it with a lightweight linen blouse for a slightly more literal take on the look.

family affairs spring 2015

back in september, i posted a little preview, but now the full family affairs spring 2015 collection is available for purchase, and i am swooning over nina’s cute prints and fun silhouettes. i am especially in love with the lookbook, shot by one of my favorite photographers, amber byrne mahoney. the collection, titled ti amo, is inspired by “eating peaches in the hammock, falling in love like a teenager, huge agave plants in elba, white heat on the autostrada, being the first person at the bakery, and grandma’s white sheets in the mediterranean sun.” i think my favorite is the amazing river crystal jumpsuit, but i’m also pretty enamored with the  ti amo frenchie crop top!

head over to family affairs to shop the collection!

outfit: family affairs holiday treat no. 12!

every year, nina of family affairs celebrates the holidays with a series of treats! and today i’m excited to announce that i’ve partnered up with her to offer holiday treat no. 12! the johnny pants, originally $188, are on sale today only for $85! these are real patchwork pants, nina selected each square of cotton menswear shirting, which was then quilted together to create the fabric. the result is a pair of playfully retro bellbottoms perfect for strolling around in the california fall. today, i paired them with my family affairs pony up shirt, an oversized vintage denim jacket, and a pair of clogs. but i’m equally excited to try wearing them with a little cropped t-shirt in warmer weather.

family affairs spring 2015 preview

and now to completely switch gears, today i’m excited to be sharing a preview of the upcoming family affairs spring 2015 collection, “ti amo.” i’ve long been a fan of nina’s dreamy designs, and this collection is no exception. she’s created a fun and playful selection of cute printed dresses in easy designs, perfect for frolicking around on summer adventures. not only that, but the lookbook was shot by one of my favorite photographers, amber byrne mahoney.

“ti amo” is inspired by eating peaches in the hammock, falling in love like a teenager, huge agave plants in elba, white heat on the autostrada, being the first person at the bakery, and grandma’s white sheets in the mediterranean sun”

i think my favorite is the cute orange creamsicle shirt dress above, but i’m also loving her geometric crystal design below. ooh, i can’t wait to see the full collection!

family affairs spring 2014

a few months back, i posted a little preview of the family affairs spring 2014 collection that i shot on a particularly sweltering nyc day. as always, it was fun to share a peek at what was to come. and now that it is almost officially spring, i thought i’d share the official look book featuring some of my favorite family affairs standbys along with a really cute selection of fun little halters and bralettes for wearing on hot and hazy summer days by the lake. once again, designer nina produced her own hand-illustrated prints with a particularly cheeky pattern of red lips with tiny little braces on a toothy grin. of her inspiration, nina says:

this collection is inspired by the golden, sharp light of the southwest, salty, white walls at the port in marseille, italian ice cream parlors of the ’80s,picking strawberries on a swedish farm, hiding behind the greenery to make out, eating watermelon on an old fishing boat in biarritz, roller skating disco to the sounds of david bowie.

she has just released the collection right here!

family affairs fall 2014

this season was the first time in a few years that i wasn’t able to visit nina in her studio to preview the latest collection during fashion week. it was hard to be away, but she sent me the images from the family affairs fall 2014 lookbook, which served as a bit of consolation. the collection, titled “milk and honey,” was inspired by:

“tea dances in london when you are wearing your patent leather dancing shoes for the first time, marguerite duras’ melancholy romance, silent movie stars in underwater films, witch potions and mornings listening to records in bed while it snows outside. “

i love the other-wordly vibe of this shoot and collection. for the prints, nina created her own alchemy symbols  referencing irish fairytales and italian futurism. it’s a fun mix of references. there are plenty of sweet dresses, but i’m also really enjoying the addition of high-rise trousers and some really cool oversized blazers for the season.

my nyfw: family affairs spring 2014 preview

on my last full day in new york, i had the pleasure of visiting one of my favorite designers in her new williamsburg studio to take a look at the upcoming family affairs spring 2014 collection. i couldn’t play dress up myself due to my growing belly, but her very lovely intern bryson was kind enough to model a few pieces for me. it was kind of like having my own little personal preview of the collection. and the light in the studio was so beautiful that it quickly turned into a little impromptu photoshoot. this is only a little peek at the collection, with many more pieces on the way, but it’s always fun to get a little glimpse at what’s in store!

family affairs spring 2013

it may be a bit gloomy and rainy on my return from spring vacation, but the family affairs spring 2013 collection is brightening my mood in anticipation of may flowers. the collection is titled “night train to cassis” and features a host of hand-drawn prints fashioned after original drawings by nina herself. and as always, the inspiration is as dreamy as the looks. of the collection, nina says,

“the feeling of night train to cassis is innocence, pure fun, the color white in the sunlight, white houses in greece, sun bleached towels, putting lemon in your friends’ hair to “bleach” it, never remembering to drink enough water. taking overnight train rides to port towns in france, riding your bike too fast and laughing. fresh bread and home made jam, grass stains from all day picnics, salty hair.”

family affairs fall 2013

and since i teased you all with a little preview of the family affairs fall 2013 collection, it only seems right some of my favorite looks! the latest collection is a print explosion! this is rather timely for me, since i’ve been secretly hoarding tons of prints these days in the hopes of eventually incorporating them into my outfits. the inspiration for this collection is as varied at the prints. nina was inspired by romantic and dreamy vignettes, “imagine late evening swimming when the lights come out and birds fly in slow motion. summer is over, we pack our bags with warmer but endlessly entertaining outfits.”  she also pulled heavily from film and music, citing harold and maude and the graduate, and david bowie’s hunky dory as some of her influences. you can certainly see the eclectic mix, pieces for a world traveller on an endless vacation sitting in hotel rooms between adventures soaking up tunes and watching classic films. a fairy tale i certainly wouldn’t mind living in!

my nyfw: a visit with family affairs

thought i’d share a few snapshots from a recent visit with nina of family affairs. nina is actually one part of the mother-daughter duo behind family affairs. she designs each collection with her loving mother, and splits her time working between her hometown in zurich and her brooklyn abode. the clothes are all produced in new york, but she usually holds her presentations in switzerland, so it’s nice for me to be able to stop by to peek at the clothes and chat about the latest collection while i’m in town.
