outfit: a holiday treat!

tis the season! though you wouldn’t know it if you were living in california! we’ve had some chilly days here and there, but just this weekend i was able to pull on one of my favorite new vintage skirts with bare legs, at least during the warm hours of the day. later on, i admit that i pulled on a pair of tights and a coat to go out, but that’s pretty much how we do it year-round here. always good to have your layers and be prepared for anything!

i’m also wearing my new top from family affairs for a very special holiday treat…

today only, family affairs is offering the pony up shirt for 30% off from $130 to $89!

family affairs fall 2012

i know it was only a couple of weeks ago that i was giving you a sneak peek of the upcoming family affairs spring collection, but today i’d like to step back and enjoy our current season with a look at family affairs fall 2012 which has just launched online. i am particularly infatuated with the super ’60s leather frankie skirt, and am also eying that darling lourdes tunic (which conveniently for me will work as a dress)! this whole collection is so pretty and easy to wear. i love her introduction of quirky animal prints and i’m happy that she brought back a few favorites in updated colorways. all in all, another beautiful collection filled with cozy pieces for fall.

my nyfw: an interview with nina

as i mentioned in a few previous posts, this fashion week i was hosting a series of videos for the modcloth blog. i’ve already shared my interviews with lauren moffatt and rachel antonoff, but today i wanted to share my latest video with nina of family affairs. we stopped by her studio on a particularly hot and muggy day to get a look at the spring 2013 collection. i’m really excited about this collection and can’t wait to get my hands on a few of these pieces!

one of my favorite fashion week traditions is getting the chance to visit with nina of family affairs. for the past few years, each season, i stop in with rebecca of the clothes horse to eat sweet treats, and coo over her latest designs. for spring, nina hand-illustrated all of the prints on clean white silk and cotton fabrics for a very light and whimsical effect. i was particularly smitten with the sixties-inspired silhouettes. not only that, but she’s also introduced a collection of housewares for the first time! i only snapped a few photos, but i promise to share the full look book once it’s ready!

outfit: nyfw day two

calivintage: nyfw day two

onto day two here in new york… this photo was snapped in williamsburg after another fun day. still trying to manage our jetlag, we woke up late before heading over to the etsy offices to visit with the lovely team of ladies behind the etsy editorial team. it’s so rare that i meet other people who have the same job as me in a professional setting, so it was lots of fun to talk shop and hear about how they run things there. not to mention getting to check out their beautiful work space. it’s pretty much just as lovely as you might imagine the etsy offices to be… filled with unique decorations, mismatched vintage desks, and beautiful art.

from there, we hopped on a ferry to take in the sights, and i split up with my team for a quick visit with nina of family affairs and rebecca of the clothes horse. all in all, it was a much more relaxed day than my first, but i still decided to lay low and skip out on the fno festivities to catch up on work.

these photos were taken on sunday after laying in the grass at the morcom rose garden by my house. i had a belly full of egg sammiches and champagne spiked with pomegranate juice, and may have dozed off in the grass for a little bit before snapping these pictures… so that is indeed the look of pure bliss on my face, haha. it was a warm day, so i jumped at the chance to pull on an easy sun dress and immediately ran for this family affairs dress! nina sent it over as a surprise gift a few months back just in time for me to take it with my on my trip to hawaii, but despite the fact that i had to resist wearing it every single day that i was there, i never managed to get any good photos of it! so i was happy that we were finally graced with a day warm enough for me to wear it!

outfit: warm weekend

calivintage: banana split

oh how sad when such a glorious weekend has to come to an end. we got legit warm spring weather in the bay area, and it couldn’t have been more perfect! on saturday, i went on a shoot for audrey grace boutique with two very talented pals, diane and jon. we wandered about in the ucb botanical gardens and around tilden park snapping photos and filming video, and it was honestly only of the easiest and most relaxed shoots i’ve ever done. i can’t share the photos just yet, so i should probably stop teasing you about it! and instead i will shift focus onto my easy weekend look: my dear friend nina of family affairs was so generous to send me this adorable little set! i know i’ve talked a lot recently about having a bit of an obsession with little vintage sets just like this. i love that i can mix and match the skirt and blouse in any number of variations, or i can simply wear them together just like this. the fabric is light and breezy, which was perfect for the hot weekend weather. and the cheerful print just makes me smile.

in other news, i finally decided that all of that vintage i’ve been hoarding over the years is taking up way too much space in my apartment, so i’ve started the process of parting with the overflow. on sunday, i sorted and photographed my entire vintage collection in anticipation of their departure. i’m not sure exactly what to do with it just yet, but i would love to find the right person to sell my collection, so definitely get in touch if you’d like to request a line-sheet! i have hundreds of pieces ranging from the 1940s through the 90s, many of which i’ve worn on my blog and plenty of which have just been stashed away in my closet for far too many years…

family affairs spring 2012

you may remember back in september, i visited with nina of family affairs for a little studio visit seen here. it’s become a bit of a tradition every season when i’m in new york for fashion week, and it’s a nice interlude between my hectic schedule. while i was there, i got to get a sneak peek at the spring collection, and have been anticipating it ever since! i am in love with the whimsical feeling of this collection. the type of clothes you could imagine wearing on a hot summer day at the carnival with an array of fun prints like an orange zebra print, pale blue patchwork, and blue and white vertical stripes. this is definitely a beautiful collection, and i’m already planning how i’m going to wear some of the pieces. i think i’ll start by bringing the clyde dress (as seen above) with me on my trip to hawaii in a little over a week!

outfit: home again

calivintage: home again

after yesterday’s recap from the polyvore live runway show featuring a very glammed-up version of myself, i thought it would only be fitting for me to squeeze in a long overdue outfit photo so you guys don’t forget what i usually look like! i was in new york solo, so i didn’t have my photographer boyfriend around to take pictures of my outfits. and in a way, it was nice to have a little break from my usual blogging routine. in fact, i usually have the most fun when i get to spend my time behind the lens.

having said that, i’m still getting dressed every day, so here is what i wore on saturday for a chill day involving a very long nap followed by an unexpectedly fruitful trip to tj maxx where i scored a very witchy marc by marc jacobs black lace dress, a nice equipment trench coat, and a cute pair of vintage-inspired mary jane heels. and of course, after all of that bargain hunting, we rewarded ourselves with a trip to lanesplitters for pizza and beer before heading home for a night of watching movies on the couch. it was pretty much the perfect transition back home after such a hectic trip, but apparently it wasn’t enough to fully recharge my batteries. i woke up sunday morning with a terrible sore throat and spent the rest of my weekend under the covers. but at least i got in a few hours of fun before i went down!

my nyfw: family affairs spring 2012 sneak peek!

calivintage: family affairs spring 2012 sneak peek!

after my fifth trip to new york for fashion week, i’ve begun to start forming a few traditions. one is that i usually spend the entire trip joined at the hip with rebecca of the clothes horse. and the other is that we always head over to brooklyn to visit the very charming nina of family affairs. she always greets us with a very warm welcome and invites us into her studio to drink coffee and eat treats before previewing her collection and playing a bit of dress up!

on this particular visit, she showed us a lovely rack full of fun and whimsical pieces that have got me wishing we could fast forward six months to spring 2012 so i can prance about on some silly boardwalk wearing all of her designs. she just shot the lookbook with maya of turned out, so i promise to share the rest of the collection soon! but for now, i thought i would show just a few photos from our visit as a little tease. don’t you just love her amazing vintage tiger flats? and i seriously can’t get enough of that pretty necklace, which is from her jewelry collection, toujours toi!
