outfit: tecumseh valley

as the sun began to set on our usual weekend walk around the neighborhood, brendan commented that he loves the autumn light. we looked up at the world around us and tried to observe just what makes it so different (and beautiful) in the fall. the air feels crisp and while the leaves certainly don’t display as many colors as they do on the east coast, they still add just a bit of depth and dimension to the landscape. and i love the light so much at this time of day, that of course, it was the perfect place to catch a few photos of my weekend wear.

i first saw this skirt back in february during a visit to the lauren moffatt studio. she pulled it out from the rack and chuckled that the inspiration for the collection was kinda like laura ingalls wilder on acid. i fell in love with the pretty, saturated colors on the spot, so of course, when the collection finally came out, i had to have it. it’s named after the song ‘tecumseh valley’ by towne’s van zandt, so i listened to the song as i got dressed, twirling around in the silk fabric paired with a cozy little sweater. the mixture of light and sound and fabric has certainly got me feeling like it’s fall in california.

today is an extra special outfit post because you get two for the price of one! that’s right, my brother and i planned a little shoot together while i was visiting my hometown over the holiday weekend. we’re in front of my grandmother’s old house on the stoop where we’ve spent so many summer afternoons since we were little kids. and this is what we wore on a sweltering sunday to beat the 104 degree heat. on days like this, the philosophy of “less is more” most definitely rings true. one more layer or even slightly heavier fabric would make the weather pretty much unbearable.

we were both in desperate need of some new frames, so my sponsor bonlook, generously let us pick out some new glasses for the occasion. and when an outfit is simple like this, it’s the perfect opportunity to accessorize with a pair of statement glasses. i’m thanking my lucky stars to have discovered them because their $99 price tag certainly beats the $400+ i spent on my last pair. in fact, i’ve already got my eye on a couple more styles to mix and match with different outfits.

i am wearing…

hand across the water

and the summer is here! this was the first weekend of the year that i could actually call hot. as in, so hot i wish i had a swimming pool and so hot that it’s basically impossible to stay inside of my sweltering apartment. and of course, i celebrated by wearing yet another sailor-inspired piece of clothing! i swear, half of my summer wardrobe revolves around the sailor motif. anyway, this is actually one of the outfits i wore for my bike video, riding around lake merritt near my house (except i wore flats). it was such a pleasant day that of course half the city was hanging around the water, sitting in the grass, and enjoying the weather.

a very blustery day

calivintage: a very blustery day

that’s right, it finally happened. after weeks of resisting, i finally had to say goodbye to bare legs and pull out a pair of tights. i actually wore a very similar version of this outfit back in february, but back then, the weather was nicer than it is now! i was wearing orange and yellow with this fresh enthusiasm for springtime weather, but this is san francisco, so it’s been raining for like a week straight, meaning that my wardrobe had suddenly started to resemble the sky. can you tell i’m getting sick of the rain? haha!

artichoke hearts

last week, i went on a little photo shoot for the style resolutions series on the modcloth blog. we headed out on a stormy day to try to get some shots, but unfortunately, we only got a few snaps before it started to rain. and i couldn’t remove my hand from my head for fear of losing my hat in the wind! but this was my outfit for the day. almost all vintage except for my jeffrey campbell heels and my trusty satchel. i’ve been meaning to get back to wearing more vintage lately, but with a very busy schedule, it can be hard to make it out to the thrift shops, especially because it takes a lot of digging to find just one prized possession. but i’m trying to remember to take more time to do the things i love, thrifting included!

in fact, you can read more about it on our latest modcloth post, style resolutions: round two! and a very special thank you to kristin cofer for taking these photos!

nerds

how to get out of a funk 101: go to the thrift store, dudes! i found both this vintage sweater and this vintage ascot polka dot blouse on a much-needed thrifting run yesterday evening. amazing how two pieces can open up a wardrobe. thanks to these two items, i got the opportunity to pull out these old huaraches from hiding and i rediscovered my old glasses which i hadn’t worn since i got those phillip lims. but most importantly, i finally figured out how to wear this beautiful steven alan skirt i recently acquired.

i’ve said this on my blog before: my ideal wardrobe would just be a mix of vintage and designer. but since i can’t really afford designer clothes, it’s a mix of designer and high street for now. but thanks to the gilt groupe sales, i might finally have my opportunity to incorporate more designer pieces into my wardrobe. if you haven’t joined, you can use my invite code. totally worth it, even if you just want to do some “window shopping.”

but moving along, since i’ve been offering you some little-known facts about myself lately, i’ll add something else into the mix: when i was in high school (from ’97 to ’01 for reference), i was totally into looking like a complete nerd. since i have really bad vision anyway, i always wore this silly pair of thick rimmed cat eye glasses and a calculator watch, and all of my pants were high waters. no joke. it was right after my punk phase and i started listening to silly post-punk emo-pop like the get up kids and mineral and the promise ring and joan of arc. phew! that was actually pretty embarrassing to admit… but i blame ian mackaye.

anyway, my high school self would have been pretty proud to know that my 26 year old self was wearing this today.

i had to include this shot. the sign in the background is the back of the grand lake theater in oakland, ca. it opened in 1926 and used to hold vaudeville and silent movie showings. they still play movies there today and it’s right within walking distance of my house!
