my nyfw: tocca spring 2014

the first show i attended when i arrived in new york last week was tocca spring 2014. i always look forward to emma fletcher’s whimsical designs and delicate details, and this collection was no exception. this season, she took inspiration from ballet dancers with pretty ruffled details, cute tap shorts, and a really lovely selection of high rise cigarette pants that i wish i could wear right now! there was also a beautiful range of sheer silk gowns, but i always prefer the more wearable daytime looks. in particular, i am a bit obsessed with the polka dot top and suspender skirt photographed above.

the tocca fall 2013 presentation was set on a haunting stage, a pitch black room with a singular spotlight shining on a floral installation in the center of the room. the girls walked in one by one, sporting luxurious silk dresses in black, blush pink, and navy with stunning houndstooth coats and big floral fascinators. the intricate details were subtle in their effect, but certainly drew the right amount of attention.

finally getting back into the swing of things, today i’d like to share the photos i snapped at the tocca spring 2013 presentation during nyfw. i’ve long been a fan of emma fletcher, since her days designer for lyell, so i’m glad that her brand has been revived at tocca. this season, she drew inspiration from kaleidoscopes and vintage hot-air balloons with mirrored displays reflecting whimsical illustrations laid out on the floors. there were plenty of bright, punchy colors mixed between black and neutral pieces with delicate lace insets for a fun and feminine touch.

on an aside, please don’t be too hard on the models! they all looked so stunning in real life, but the overhead lighting was really harsh and cast shadows and a green glow on their pretty faces! hopefully it doesn’t distract too much from a very lovely collection.

tocca fall 2012

continuing with the fall trend this week, i decided to share the tocca fall 2012 collection. i’m absolutely smitten with this very chic set of looks that elegantly ride the line between masculine and feminine. i think this collection speaks to me so much because i often find myself dressing much in the same manner. one day i’ll be wearing a little ’60s dress and then next day i’ll be sporting a button-up blouse with pants and loafers. add in some delicate details like intricate lace and some decidedly academic inspiration and you’ve got a perfect formula for fall dressing.

oh hello! i just got back from a quick weekend trip to visit my family in southern california. i didn’t take a ton of photos, but i promise to be share the few snapshots i did take while i was there. the weather was hot (reaching highs in the 90s), and it was good to see family and familiar places from my past.

but before we get into that, i thought i’d catch up and share an outfit from last week. and yes, it’s another shift dress! no matter how hard i try to stay away from this almost universally unflattering form, i find myself collecting these shapeless dresses and wearing them more often than i care to admit. though i’ve certainly shared a good portion of my ever-growing collection on my blog (see here). they’re just so easy and comfortable, and they evoke that playful 1960s spirit that i love so much. they also have a tendency to create phantom belly bumps and emphasized arms… but, try as i might, i’m still an absolute sucker for a shift dress and don’t think i’ll be giving up the habit any time soon!

tocca fall 2011

a little while back, i happened upon the new tocca fall 2011 lookbook while browsing around on tumblr. as soon as i laid my eyes on the look above, complete with a perfect vintage-inspired coat, peter pan collar, and fuzzy little cap, i fell in love. and it’s no coincidence, since the new designer at tocca is none other than emma fletcher (the former designer of the now defunct label, lyell). and this season has plenty of looks to love: from the thick wool coats to the pretty scalloped shorts, and delicate silk and lace details. and no need to wait, because the entire collection is available now online, even if you just want to take a peek!
