a change of scenery

oh hey guys, look who got off her perch up on the roof? yep, that’s right, i finally decided to bring my camera with me out into the world to share with you some of the beautiful scenery out here on the sunny side of the bay in oakland, ca! i don’t know if i’ve ever expressed it here on the blog, but i’ve been meaning to do more outfit shoots in different locations around my city, but it’s proven to be a bit of a challenge for me to remember to take my camera with me when i go on little outings! i generally think of my daily outfit posts as being pretty straight forward. my boyfriend is my photographer and has a day job, so we usually have a 5 – 10 minute window in which we can rush to snap pictures before he leaves for work. i starting taking pictures up on the roof because i thought it would be a nicer way to display what i’m wearing than, say, standing in front of a blank wall in my apartment (not that there’s anything wrong with that!).

but, it can certainly get a little tedious since i’m doing it 5 days a week, and as one reader pointed out, i guess i’m getting boring. her comment definitely resonated with me because i have been feeling the same way! so yesterday we remembered to bring the camera with us on a stroll through the famous mountain view cemetery which is about 10 blocks from where i live. it’s a huge cemetery established in 1863 filled with beautiful crypts built for some of the most notable figures in california history. most eerily, it is the final resting place of the black dahlia, but the list is so long that all i can do is guide you to the wikipedia page for it! anyway, it’s nestled in the hills above oakland, so you get an expansive 360 degree view including downtown oakland and san francisco across the bay, which attracts a good amount of foot traffic from joggers and people walking their dogs, or even families flying kites. it certainly is a nice place to take a walk.

jacket: gap belted utility jacket
blouse: vintage eyelet blouse from helgesok vintage

oof! a strong gust of wind at the most inopportune moment. always wear proper undergarments! i may have given the family nearby a full moon….

  1. Gorgeous! I love the change up in the scenery :) Yeah… I learned from a young age to wear shorts under any garment (practically) that I wear. It's rather unfortunate getting mocked about your pink underwear when you're in kindergarden!

  2. it is always good to get a change of scenery. i love your outfit as usual, especially the boots.

  6. Your new backdrop isn't lost on us! The colors of the park really make your outfit pop. Lovely outfit, of course!!

Hahaha, some unwitting family got to see the full moon! I'm so glad your boyfriend caught that on camera. thanks for posting it – Hilarious. It's happened to the best of us!

I don't know if you were size 7s (shoes), but I'm hosting a vintage giveaway you might like. Please pop by and check it out!

  7. Well, I am biased because I study historic preservation, but I love posts that feature fashion and architecture. I posted a little while back on Victorian cemeteries. They were actually one of the few open spaces in Urban areas on the east coast and therefore served as parks and recreation facilities in addition to housing the dead.
A super great (fiction) book and later movie regarding cemeteries in southern california is The Loved One by Evelyn Waugh.

  8. I agree about switching things up! Although it can get challenging. For me, it's fun to go out and look for new places to take pictures. And sometimes when I'm out during the day I'll make a mental note to come back to that location some time for outfit pictures!

  9. You're a great location scout. Beautiful images :-)

I am pretty certain everyone who wears skirts/dresses does the occasional Monroe ;-)

  10. I had a picnic here once with chicken sandwiches and strawberry shortcake from Bakesale Betty's (have you eaten there? Heaven!)

  11. Love the boots with the wool socks. I've been trying to find some over the knee ones just like that! The jacket with the brown boots gives it a kinda safari/explorer feel. Love it.

  12. These pictures are to die for, you look wonderful!
And fyi, you are totally not getting boring?! I love the rooftop shots! And anyway I look at your blog for you, not the background! Sounds like that reader needs to chill out a bit.

  14. Beautiful scenery!! It's definitely a nice change, though i like your roof top pictures!

    Love the boots!

  15. I'm excited to see the different places you will be going to, I haven't explored much of Oakland despite living in the bay all my life. Cute outfit! Like one commenter said, I just wear shorts under most of my dresses these days lol.

  16. i agree with jess, shorts can be a pretty good option for those windy days. love the cute on-the-go look of the outfit.

DUDE! the architecture in the new setting is beautiful! especially those ornate doors!

  17. It's lovely to see you outside for a change! Though I would love your posts anyway even if the pics were taken at the rooftop, you really should be awarded for posting everyday:)

  20. I've been there before, I've done a photo shoot there before in the mausoleum… whoa that was November 2008, it was super cold! But it's such a beautiful cemetery. You're looking amazing as usual. Love your utility jacket! Hope you had a good weekend, Erin! :)

  23. because i am a nerd, this cemetary totally reminds me of the cemetaries from buffy the vampire slayer. i wonder if they used it for the show?

  24. I let out a short gasp when I saw that you werent on your roof! Im so glad that you chose not to do it today because I love all of these photos. Your city is gorgeous and so are you my dear. I love these socks on you! x

  25. I love the photos and the new backgrounds! The outfit is great too, I am still trying to find an acceptable way to style my own lavender thigh-highs.

P.S. Do you ever spot the dudes from Green Day?

  26. I'm so jealous. Every American blogger seems to live near really interesting scenary! Silly England.

  27. You're so dangerous. Look those photos! They made me feel damn envious… your boots too, actually. Oh but I love the scenery. You look so fresh and, as always, gorgeous.
    Have a great day!

  28. Love your jacket. I don't think your rooftop is boring; if I had a good one I would never leave it.

  29. Beautiful scenery! I have no problem with the same backdrop every time, though. I do like the shoes too!

  30. Haha that last picture is the best, I love when I get to see those off moments for bloggers. I think its good to just sometimes laugh at yourself.

Luckily I do embarrassing stuff everyday so I have lots of practice!

Also I love your roof shots, not gonna lie, you are the one who gave me the idea to try out my own roof!
