hawaiian vacation time!

calivintage: hawaiian vacation time!

wahoooo! i’m writing this blog post on the second day of my hawaiian vacation! i’m visiting the big island (in kailua-kona, to be exact) with my boyfriend and his family in a little resort near the ocean. i am beyond thankful to be here, especially since it’s my first trip to hawaii, and my first real vacation in a very long time! so naturally, this morning i woke up bright and early and did some exploration of the beaches nearby. we stumbled upon this little area behind a hotel near a place we called the “volcano temple.” it’s  actually the site of a project to restore ancient ruins built from volcanic rock in the 19th century.

it was a nice introduction to the area where we are staying, and it was fun to hop around on the volcanic rock and snap a few photos of the things we saw. i also enjoyed the visual contrast between the dark rocks and my lightly colored dress. and yes, you can expect me to be dressed like a tourist all week. it’s pretty much required when you travel from such a chilly climate to a place with 86 degree highs, 74 degree lows, and between 50 – 80 percent humidity! i’m still adjusting to the sweltering heat, but don’t think that’s a complaint! i’m loving every moment of it.

i hope to keep posting outfits and photo diaries on my blog while i’m here, but  i’ve also been chronicling my adventures on instragram! so you can follow me there or catch my updates on twitter and tumblr!

dress: sportsgirl (from last summer)
shoes: saltwater sandals
bag: vintage straw tote
hat: altered straw hat from modcloth (i removed the decorative band)
sunglasses: norma kamali square cat eye

  1. you look adorable, and I love the SERIOUS change of scenery ;) I wish I were in Hawaii! I love swimming in the ocean so much, but it’s sooo cold here. I hope your strawberry drink didn’t ruin your night!

  2. that’s funny…you’re tattoos makes the outfit even more beautiful and speical!
do you have pics of them? they look very unique and interesting :)

  3. I LOVE Hawaii! I never got to go to the big island, but it looks absolutely gorgeous. The weather was AMAZING both times I’ve been…of course I’m from Tennessee, where the heat index is 100+ every day in the summer :)

    1. after watching lost, i thought all of hawaii was going to look like that! but it’s pretty varied in terrain. this is what it looks like near where i’m staying, but today we’re going to trek out to see volcanoes and waterfalls! i imagine it’s going to look pretty different! we’ll see!

  4. Such an awesome backdrop, and you look adorable! People are always writing me for advice on what to pack for Hawaii, and it seems like you did a great job of incorporating your signature style into your vacation suitcase!

  5. These are amazing photos! So glad you are having a blast! Nahhh…you totally don’t look like a tourist, especially if you look THAT fab!! :)

  6. ooooohhh…what a pretty dress! I believe the yellow straw tote has to be one of your best investments. I’ve seen it in alot of pictures and always adding that pop of color.

  7. Beautiful pics, the place seems amazing. Hope I’ll visit Hawai one day. Enjoy the holidays ,even if that means that you won’t update the blog for a while, rest from blogging is needed sometimes. ;)

  8. I absolutely love that dress! It’s so simple and gorgeous. I like how minimal your outfit is too, and how simple it is. You should have showed all you packed! For some reason, I see you being a very organized and minimal packer. :)

  9. I love how nice and light your dress looks! It contrasts so nicely against the black volcanic rocks. I hope you’re having a fantastic time vacationing!

  10. I’m diggin the contrast too! I hope you’re having quite the relaxing vacay Ms. Erin, I’m excited to see more photos from your trip (I’ve never been to Hawaii so I guess i’ll just have to live vicariously through you!) :)

  11. Oh my – isn’t Hawaii lovely?? My husband and I took a two week camping trip all over Maui in the spring and we had a blast – I could have moved there! :) I wish I could say I looked as cute while on the trip, though – lol. Camping will do that to ya…
