outfit: houndstooth

calivintage: houndstooth

when i pulled on this silly houndstooth dress for the first time, i immediately found myself singing the brady bunch theme song in my head. isn’t it so perfectly ’70s kitsch? not sure how much it comes across on my blog, but lately i’ve been obsessed with everything late ’60s/early ’70s. so of course, this dress immediately jumped out at me… despite the fact that it is houndstooth. a little known fact about me is that i went to culinary school and am a certified pastry chef. many moons ago, i worked in bakeries decorating cakes and making sweet little tarts and eclairs and things. but i also had to wear these really awful houndstooth chef’s pants. for years, i avoided the print because of those terrible pants. but switch it to purple and throw it on a dolly dress, and we’ve been reunited like old friends.

wearing: vintage houndstooth dress from la radio vintage on etsy, vintage t-straps from pretty penny vintage in oakland, l.a.m.b. fall 2012 mini bag in ponyhair houndstooth, radiant cosmetics lipstick in peony

  1. I’d no idea you were a pastry chef! That is so rad. And that dress is perfection. If you get a chance, I’d love you to stop by my blog! I just did a post on my latest thrifted finds (including fringe boots!) and I have a giveaway going!

    xoxo

    1. it’s true! though i haven’t worked as one in many years now. it was a really fun experience and i actually enjoyed it quite a lot, but i knew that i wanted to try out a few more things before i committed to it, and i’m glad i did, or else i may never have started blogging!

  2. Erin, please, can you tell me what metering mode did you use when taking picturest? And did you use reflector? :)

    1. hi kristina! these photos were shot on a canon 5d with a 50mm 4/1.4 lens. it was on manual mode, set at 100iso at 1.4 with evaluative metering. not sure exactly what the setting was there. no reflector. we mostly just try to shoot in spots with really nice light!

    1. hm.. i may be wrong, but i think the way he does it is to leave the top without any layers, but i think it’s undercut and has internal texture, meaning there are layers beneath? i never pay a ton of attention to what he’s saying when he’s doing it! i also have a little routine where i add kerastase volumactive mousse when it’s wet, then blowdry with a diffuser while scrunching it until it’s almost dry. then i and add bumble & bumble sumotech before drying completely. on this particular day, i also used a curling iron just on the front section of my hair to add a little wave. hope that helps!!

  3. I love that dress on you! I am recently obsessed with houndstooth accessories of late, Joe Fresh has thee perfect houndstooth rubber boots!
That’s so cool that you went to culinary school! What school did you go to? I’m looking into becoming a certified pastry chef as well.
    Love your blog :)

    1. i went to the california culinary academy in san francisco, but that was many years ago. i know it had quite a good reputation at the time, but i’ve heard some negative press more recently. at the time, i thought it was great and i learned quite a bit, though i definitely think you get out of it what you put in. best of look on your search! it’s a really fun profession!
